Gujarat Vidyapith was founded by Mahatma Gandhi on October 18, 1920 to release the Indian youths from the shackles of British colonial rule.
The university is committed to Gandhi and values of truth and non-violence and seeks to inculcate a sense of commitment in its students for the reconstruction of the country in accordance with Gandhiji's ideals.
The Government of India declared the Vidyapith as a deemed university in 1963 and today, it is one of the national universities seeking to promote Gandhiji's ideals of service-oriented education.
The main campus Spread over 21 acres of land of Gujarat Vidyapith is located on the Ashram Road, Ahmedabad.
Its peace Research Centre conducts distance education programmes. Presently, it conducts courses in Gandhian Philosophy and Peace Research leading to M.A., M.Phil and Ph.D. The Centre conducts various workshops and seminars on Economics, Political Science, Education, Sociology and Journalism with respect to Gandhian thoughts.
