Jain Vishva Bharati Institute was founded in 1991. The establishment of the Institute was inspired by the teachings of great saint and scholar Acharya Tulsi. He was the ninth Acharya, the Supreme Head of the Jain Terapanth religious sect. He was the first Anushasta (Preceptor) of the Institute. The present Anushasta is Acharya Shri Mahaprajna who is the successor of Acharya Tulsi.
The Jain Vishva Bharati Institute was accorded with the status of a Deemed University by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under Section 3 of the U.G.C. Act of 1956, in 1991 on the recommendation of the Government of India.
Acharya Tulsi and now Acharya Mahaprajna work untiringly towards eradicating social evils, reforming social customs, building national character and educating the masses on the principles of nonviolence, universal peace and brotherhood.

Jain Vishva Bharati Institute started correspondence courses from the academic session 1993. The study material of the Directorate is prepared by experts. The fees exemption for the teachers serving in any Government recognized school or college including Sadhus/Monks and sadhvis/Nuns of any religious order. Examination facilities are also provided to them in the nearest Government recognized school in their chaturmas period.
The institute has four centres all over India.
