Jamia Hamdard University has been established under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Act. In view of the high standards of teaching in the Hamdard College of Pharmacy, Hamdard Tibbi College, Rufaida College of Nursing and published work of Indian Institute of History of Medicine and Medical Research (IHMMR) and Indian Institute of Islamic Studies (IIIS), the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) declared Jamia Hamdard as a ‘Deemed to be a University’ on the recommendation of the University Grants Commission.
The university was founded by Hakeem Abdul Hameed who was a great visionariiy, a philanthropist and an entrepreneur. He set up this institution with a view to contribute and address the problem of educational backwardness of Indian Muslims. The entire University Community is motivated by the ideas of its Founder and works ceaselessly for achieving highest level of excellence.
In recognition of the University’s contribution to the teaching and research, the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), a constituent body of the University Grants Commission, conferred it ‘A’ Grade in the accreditation exercise during March 2003.
The University concentrates on professional courses, which equip the students to get placement in the highly competitive job markets in the country and abroad. Apart from offering various class regular campus programs, the university also offers various undergraduate and postgraduate Diploma courses through distance education mode. The Directorate of Open and Distance Learning provides key resources for conducting these programs.

The Directorate of Open and Distance Learning (DODL) was established in 2004 to promote education through open and distance learning systems, which adopt flexible and innovative methods of education to ensure ‘independent learning’ to anyone, anytime and anywhere. Currently the institute is offering professional and job oriented courses viz. Biotechnology, Health Sciences, Pharmacy, Science, Computers & IT, and Management.
The Directorate has several recognized study centres across the country for delivery of programs for effective learning. The printed study materials will be mailed to the Study Centres. Students are advised to contact Coordinator from time to time. The students will get study material free of cost.
