Manonmaniam Sundaranar University is a state university established under an act of the Tamil Nadu state legislation and is recognized by the University Grants Commission. The university is located at Abishekapatti, Tirunelveli in the state of Tamil Nadu.

The university offers courses in arts, science, commerce and professional courses viz. Environmental Sciences, Marine Sciences and Technology, Information Technology and Engineering, Criminology and Criminal Justice, Management Studies etc.

Apart from offering regular programs in the above fields, the varsity also offers several diploma, certificate, undergraduate, post-graduate and research programs through distance mode. The resources are provided by the Directorate of Distance and Continuing Education which is a constituent unit of the university. The Directorate prepares course materials and provides it to the students through its recognized study centres. The university is also planning to open new study centres in major cities all over India.
