Mahatma Gandhi University (formerly Gandhiji University) came into existence on 2nd October 1983 as a state university under the Mahatma Gandhi University Act, 12 of 1985, enacted by the Kerala state Legislature. The headquarters of the University is at Priyadarshini Hills, about 12 kms away from Kottayam town. The university was granted full recognition by the University Grants Commission with the passage of time. It is a member of both the Association of Indian Universities and the Association of Commonwealth Universities.
The University has 25 teaching and research departments, 11 University Colleges of Teaching Education, 26 regional centers, 3 study centers, 5 information centers and 49 Off Campus Academic Centers. There are 108 colleges affiliated to the University. University Library was the first in the country to be fully automated as stipulated by U.G.C.
The university’s School of Distance Education offers 19 undergraduate and postgraduate programs in various fields of education. For admission into MCA and MBA programs, students are required to take the entrance examination. The school has established several off-campus academic centers in India and abroad.
Learning is a continuous process. To advance and disseminate learning and knowledge by diversity of means is the virtuous task of educational institutions. School of Distance Education provides opportunity for higher education to a large segment of the population, with a view to promoting the educational well-being of the community.
