To change the image of a regional University, since last 4-5 years, several attempts are being made. The standards of the teaching process and research works are also being raised by exploring new fields of higher learning in rapidly emerging fields like Industrial Chemistry, Space Science, Environmental Science, Bio-Chemistry, Sericulture, Polymer Chemistry and Computer Science, in addition to basic science disciplines.

The University Department of Physics has been recently identified by UGC for its Special Assistance Programme and recognized as Department of Research Support. Besides the faculties of Arts and Social Sciences are also striving to meet the demands of changing time. To step forward in the path of continuous progress, the University has established Centre for Women's Studies and extension activities through Adult and Continuing Education and Shramik Vidyapeeth.

The University is encouraging merit by introducing an unique scheme called 'Shivaji University Merit Scholarship's offering 500 scholarships to meritorious students in affiliated colleges.

Shivaji University has been accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) Bangalore, with B+ (* * * * * as per earlier grading system).
It has now geared up to transcend the regional image and emerging as one of the premier institutes of higher education and research in India.

Department of Adult and Continuing Education

The Department of Adult and Continuing Education is established in 1984. It covers various research areas namely Panchayati Raj System, Social Problems, Water Management, Adolescent and Adult Education. Since the inception of the department, it
has been conducting activities in extension in education in the area of four districts i.e. Sangli, Satara, Solapur & Kolhapur through the affiliated colleges in the four Districts.

Department also organizes activities based on needs of target group. It mainly organizes activities in the areas such as literacy, adult education, continuing education, population education, human rights education, legal literacy, women education, consumer education, value education etc.

Department also organizes vocational/Career Oriented Programmes, Equivalent and Quality of life Improvement Programmes, Leadership and Human Resource Development Programmes. On the other hand, it also conduct programmes to improve communication skills, life skills, survival skills, vocational skills etc.
