Patna University came into existence on September 13th, 1917 and got the recognition from UGC in 1956.

Today the university has nine faculties, 32 P.G. Departments, and 11 Colleges. It runs Postgraduate classes in most of the subjects and some new even have been added. To mention some such courses are Biotechnology, Computer Diploma Courses, and Management Courses.

The university has a Central Library, which is being computerized and is linked with INFLIBNET.

About Directorate of Distance Education

The Directorate of Distance Education (DDE), Patna University was established in 1974 under the 5 Year Plan Scheme of the UGC. The institute offers programs in Arts, Sience and Commerce. The total student strength is around 12000 for all these programs. The institute aims at providing opportunities to gain higher education to those students who are employed or otherwise engaged and are unable to attend regular classes.
