The Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata was established on May 8, 1962, under the Rabindra Bharati Act of the Government of West Bengal, 1961, to mark the birth centenary of the Nobel lauret Rabindranath Tagore.
The university has three faculties, out of which the two – Faculty of Fine Arts and Faculty of Visual Arts are still running in ancestral residence of Rabindra Nath Tagore. The Arts faculty is located at 56A, B. T. Road, Kolkata-50. The University was reconstituted in 1981 by the Rabindra Bharati Act, 1981.
Directorate of Distance Education under Rabindra Bharati University was started from 2002 - 2003 academic session following the approval of the State Government. It has the status of an Institution under Rabindra Bharati University. The institute is now offering bachelor and master programs in Rabindra Sangeet and master programs in English, Bengali, History, Social Work etc.
