The Government of Tami lNadu established the Bharathiar University in 1982 under the provision of the Bharathiar University Act, 1981. In May, 1985 the University received the recognition from University Grants Commission (UGC) New Delhi for the purpose of grants.
The University is named after the great national poet Subramania Bharathi. The University is striving to materialize the dream of the great poet of transforming educational institutes into temple of knowledge and learning.
The University is extended in 1000 acres of land, located at the backdrop of Maruthamalai Hills in the Western Ghat range. It is 15 kms from the city of coimbatore.
The University comprises 119 affiliated colleges, 81 Arts and Science Colleges, 30 are Colleges of Education, 7 Management institutions and 1 Air Force Administration College. On the other hand, there are 19 Research Institutes of the State and Central Governments, which are recognized by the University for Research Purpose.
The Bharathiar University is presently catering to more than 1, 50,000 students. With its motto “Educate to Elevate” the University is making constant effort to make youths of the nation skillful and help them to develop creative attitudes.
School of Distance Education
The School of Distance Education (SDE) is located in the Bharathiar University campus which is about 15 kms away from the city of Coimbatore on the Maruthamalai Road. To assist and facilitate the students of the school, job fairs and career conferences are also conducted by the University. There is no provision of entrance exam to get enrollment.
