Scholarships For Pursuing Post Graduate Studies (M.A. / M.Sc.) IN Mathematics For The Academic Year 2009-2010

The National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM) invites applications for the grant of scholarships to students for pursuing studies for M.A. / M.Sc. degree in mathematics.

Eligibility:

Applicants must be motivated B. A. / B. Sc. first class degree holders, or students, who have appeared for B. A. / B. Sc. final year examination and expect a bachelors degree with first class, or B.Sc. (honours) degree holders with at least second class, or students who have appeared for B.Sc. (honours) final year examination and expect a B. Sc. (honours) degree with at least second class. Students who have completed three years of an integrated M. Sc. course with cumulative grades equivalent to first class are eligible to apply. Students with good academic record and who are in M.Sc. (Part-I) or in the fifth year of a 5 year integrated M.Sc. course are also eligible to apply.

Applicants should be below the age of 23 years as on January 1, 2009.Exceptional cases, however, may be considered on merit.

The Scholarship:

Successful candidates will be eligible to receive a scholarship of Rs.
6,000/- (Rs. six thousand only) per month, during their two-year (one year if the student is granted the scholarship during the second year) M.A. / M. Sc. programme. The scholarships are sanctioned for one year at a time and are renewable at the end of the year, subject to satisfactory progress. Students who are in M.Sc. (Part-I) or in the fifth year of a 5 year integrated M.Sc. course will get the scholarship only for one year.

To avail of the scholarship the students have to be enrolled in an appropriate institution, in India, for an M.A. / M.Sc. degree in Mathematics. The scholarship will be paid through the institution they join.

Selection Procedure:

Selection will be made on the basis of a written test followed by
interview of short-listed candidates. The written test will be held on
Saturday, September 19, 2009. The questions will be primarily in the
areas of Algebra, Analysis and Geometry. The test will be for two and
half hours and involve questions with short answers. (Please visit http://www.nbhm.dae.gov.in for question papers for some earlier years.)
The written test will be conducted at the following centres:

Zone 2 : Allahabad, Indore, Jabalpur
Zone 3 : Mumbai, Goa, Pune, Vallabh Vidyanagar
Zone 4 : Kolkata, Bhubaneswar, Guwahati, Ranchi, Shilong
Zone 5 : Chennai, Bangalore, Cochin, Hyderabad

How to Apply:

Applications on plain paper should be made in the format given at the end of the advertisement. They should be sent in duplicate along with a recent passport size photograph attached to each copy and a self-addressed envelope to the appropriate person for the Zone in which the candidate wishes to appear for the written test. The envelope containing the application should be super-scribed “NBHM M.A. / M.Sc. Scholarships”. Addresses of persons (zonal coordinators) to whom the applications should be sent, are given below.

Two centers where the candidate could appear for the written test must be clearly indicated giving the order of preference. While it is not guaranteed that a centre of a candidate’s choice will be allotted, every effort will be made to do so. Under exceptional circumstances, a candidate may allotted a center from the zone, which is not from those indicated by the candidate.

Boyscast Fellowship For The Year 2009-10

The "Better Opportunities for Young Scientists in Chosen Areas of Science & Technology (BOYSCAST)" programme of the Department of Science & Technology (DST) provides opportunities to the young Indian scientists / technologists to visit institutions abroad, interact with scientists/technologists there, get trained in latest research techniques and conduct R&D in specially chosen frontline areas of science & technology.

Applications are invited from Indian Nationals for the award of fellowships under the BOYSCAST programme for conducting advanced research and undergoing training in advanced research techniques in overseas research laboratories/institutes, in chosen frontline areas of science & technology for the period of three to twelve months. The chosen areas fall under the following broad areas: (I) Atmospheric and Earth Sciences; (2) Chemical Sciences; (3) Engineering Sciences; (4) Life Sciences; (5) Mathematical Sciences; and (6) Physical Sciences.

The candidates may please visit our websites given below for the detailed specific chosen areas under each of the above broad areas. The amount of fellowship is US $ 3000 (or equivalent in other foreign currency) per month with maximum duration of fellowship being 12 months.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Young Indian Scientists and Technologists who fulfill the following conditions can submit applications proposal for award of BOYSCAST fellowship:

(i) Academic Qualifications: Master’s Degree in Engineering/Technology or equivalent or M.D. in Medicine or equivalent with research experience or Ph.D. in Science/Engineering or equivalent.

(ii) Age: Up to 35 years (as on 1st April 2009). The applicants belonging to SC/ST/OBC and women candidates may be allowed relaxation in the age limit up to 5 years.

(iii) Employment: A regular position in a recognized S&T institution / university/college. Candidate must be officially sponsored their application to be formally forwarded) by the employer/head of the institution or agency with commitment to depute them for research/training under BOYSCAST programme. Forwarding note
merely stating that above would be considered only after award of fellowship will not be considered by DST.

(iv) Place of Work: The fellow should be accepted by a foreign scientific/ technological institution which is internationally recognized as an outstanding institution where maior work in the identified area is in progress.

(v) Candidates who have earlier availed of the BOYSCAST fellowship will not be eligible for consideration again for this fellowship. The candidates who have availed any other overseas fellowship for a period of more than three months through any Government/public funding agency during last two years will also not be considered for this fellowship.

PROCEDURE FOR APPLICATION: Application for the award of BOYSCAST fellowship should be sent in the prescribed format. Application is required to be forwarded through the head of Agency / Organization / university where the candidate is employed.

Tata Innovation Fellowship

SCHEME:
To recognize the contribution of scientists in various fields of biotechnology Life Sciences, Agriculture, Biomedical Sciences, Bio engineering, Translational Health sciences and other related disciplines, who are engaged in discovery, innovation and invention, the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) has instituted a scheme “Tata Innovation Fellowship”.

OBJECTIVES:
This competitive fellowship is to recognize scientists with an outstanding track record in biological sciences and a deep commitment to find Innovative solutions to major problems in health care, agriculture and other related areas. The aim is to reward interdisciplinary work of high quality with emphasis on translation and innovation.

ELIGIBILITY:

i) The fellowship is open to Indian Nationals residing in India who are below the age of 60 years.

ii) The applicant should possess a Ph.D degree in Life Sciences, Agriculture, Veterinary Science or a degree in Medical Sciences, Engineering or an equivalent degree in Biotechnology related areas. The applicant must have put in several years of work in the specific area.

iii) The candidate must have a regular position in a University/ Institute/ Organization and should be engaged in research and development. If he/she is availing any other fellowship, he/she will have to opt for only one of the fellowships.

NUMBER : Number of fellowships is 5 per year.

DURATION:
The duration of the fellowship will be initially for three years which can be extended by two years on a fresh appraisal.

NATURE OF SUPPORT:

The amount of the fellowship will be Rs.20,000/- per month in addition to regular salary from the host institute.

In addition, each Fellow will receive a contingency grant of Rs.5.00 lakh per annum for purchase of consumables, equipment, international and domestic travel, engaging manpower and other contingent expenditure to be incurred in connection with the implementation of the project. to be carried out during the tenure of the fellowship.

The Tata Innovation Fellows would be eligible for regular research grant(s) through extramural and other research schemes of various S&T agencies of the Government of India.

Stanford-India Biodesign Fellowship - 2009
Applications are invited for a fellowship opportunity in Biomedical Device innovation for the year 2010; jointly sponsored by Department of Biotechnology (Ministry of Science and Technology Govt. of India) and Stanford University, USA, in partnership with Indo-US Science & Technology Forum.

The Stanford-India Biodesign (SIB) program explores the basics of
biomedical technology innovation and entrepreneurship through an intensive one-year fellowship at the Stanford University, the All India institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and the Indian institute of Technology. Delhi. Fellows are mentored by experts in the USA and India.

Fellowship pays stipend, tuition, travel and health benefits.

Candidates with graduate or postgraduate degrees (Engineers, Doctors, Business Professionals, others) have passion for invention and early-stage development of new medical technologies addressing the clinical needs in India are encouraged to apply.

Women Scientist Fellowship Programme 2009

The Fellowship Scheme for Women Scientists for societal programmes (WOS – B) is initiative of the department of science & technology. This scheme is meant for all those women having a burning desire to utilize their scientific acumen through active research and development projects which are aimed at meeting societal needs and aspirations.

Objectives:

Provide an opportunity for women scientists to re-enter into active research after a career break through support for S&T based R&D projects addressing the needs of people in unorganized urban or rural areas; and

Provide opportunity for S&T capacity building of women on issues relevant in societal programmes.

Project proposals could be for:

a) Research, development and adaptation of technology to improve the quality of life and provide additional opportunities for income generation in rural areas or urban slums;

b) Adaptation and transfer of an innovative technology from laboratory to field;

c) Capacity building of applicant in technology areas relevant to the needs in rural areas.

Nature of Support Provided:

Support will include a scholarship grant of Rs.15,000 per month for candidates with Ph.D., M.Tech., MS/MD and Rs.10,000 per month for candidates having post graduate degree for a period of two years.

Grant for minor equipment, consumables, contingencies, travel and overheads will also be considered if found necessary under the work plan.

Qualifications:

Indian nationals living in India and who are currently not employed in permanent position and who possess one of the following qualifications:

Ph.D. degree in science, master’s degree in engineering or technology, architecture, medicine or pharmacy.

Who have break in career for at least three years or more after having masters degree in science or bachelor’s degree in engineering or medicine, architecture, or pharmacy.

Age: The applicant should be below the age of 50 years as on 15/02/2009.

Others:

Candidates selected for award of the fellowship are not expected to register for higher degree during the period of fellowship.

Candidates already having a regular jobs or fellowship will not be considered unless they advance cogent reasons for making the change. In such cases the application should be accompanied by a letter from the Head of the Institution agreeing to release the candidate.

The project proposal must show an active association with a field agency in regard to implementation of the project irrespective of the fact whether the candidate is attached to an educational institution or R&D institution or any other agency. A letter to that effect from the field agency is required.

A certificate from the host institution, where the project will be actually carried out extending infrastructural or administrative support for the project must be enclosed with the application. Similarly, a certificate from the identified field agency showing the agreement to get associated with the project is also required.

Duration: The scholarship will be given for duration of two years. The period may be extended to the third year in exceptional cases, if recommended by experts during periodic reviews.

Selection Mechanism: A committee of experts will be involved in the selection process. The two-tier selection process will be adopted involving initial screening and subsequent individual presentation by the screened-in candidates before a group of experts. The selected candidates will be informed by post. The list will also be posted on the web site of the Division.

SCHOLARSHIP FOR HIGHER EDUCATION (SHE)

Submission of Application for the "SCHOLARSHIP FOR HIGHER EDUCATION (SHE)" - a component of the Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE)’ being implemented by the Department of Science Technology (DST), New Delhi.

Genesis of INSPIRE: Global competitiveness in the changing global knowledge economy calls for expansion and right-sizing of the Research and Development base of the country. Need for special interventions for attracting youth to study of natural sciences and careers with research is recognized. Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE) is a Programme launched by the Government of India to strengthen the National Science and Technology base. It is being implemented by the Department of Science and Technology (DST).

About INSPIRE: Programme includes three components namely Scheme for Early Attraction of Talents for Science (SEATS), Scholarships for Higher Education (SHE) and Assured Opportunity for Research Careers (AORC). The Scheme SHE is focused on attraction of talent to study of natural basic sciences at the bachelor and master’s level education. SHE is currently limited to support for educational programmes at BSc, BSc (Hons), MSc and integrated master’s level course in sciences leading to MSc in any branch of natural and basic sciences namely mathematics, statistics, physics, chemistry, earth sciences and life sciences.

Call for Applications: Applications are invited from eligible candidates for ‘Scholarship for Higher Education (SHE)’ component of INSPIRE. Total of 10,000 scholarships are available annually under SHE starting April 2008. The scholarships are limited only to the candidates studying courses in natural basic sciences (BSc, BSc (Hons), integrated MSc) in any one of the recognized institutions in India. Eligibility criterion for the scholarships are a) performance in board examinations within the cutoff threshold (of top 1%) for each state or central board examination at the class X and class XII level and/or b) performance in any of the specified competitive examinations within stipulated cutoff ranks. The eligible applicant must be already enrolled into degree level education in natural/basic sciences in any of the recognized institutions in India.

Criteria for Eligibility for SHE:

a) Based on Performance in Board Examinations: The candidates should
have obtained aggregate marks in the top 1% in the board examination at both class X and XII levels. For example, the candidates applying for the award in 2008 should have secured marks within the top 1% in class X in the year 2005 and class XII in 2007 in the respective board examinations and joined a degree course leading to BSc or BSc (Hons) of integrated MSc in natural/basic sciences in any institution in India and returned to study of second year in the academic year 2008-09. Cut-off marks for various board examinations conduced in the year 2005 and 2007 are listed in Table 1.

b) Based on Performance in Competitive Examinations : Performance within the top 10,000 ranks in Joint Entrance Examination of IIT, AIEEE and CBSE-medical and joining courses in degree level courses in natural/basic sciences in any recognized Indian institution. The scheme in its current format does not include courses in engineering, medicine, technology and other professional courses.

c) Based on Performance in Competitive Examinations : Clearance of competitive examinations conducted by institutions listed in Table 3 and all candidates securing admissions and joining courses in natural basic sciences conduced by Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER), National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER), integrated MSc courses in Indian Institutes of Technology, Department of Atomic Energy - Centre for Basic Science (DAE-CBS) course from the academic year 2008-09 are eligible.

Value and Type of Support: Eligible candidates will receive annually scholarship total value Rs 80,000 per candidate. The cash value payable to the SHE scholarship holder is Rs 60,000 per annum. All the SHE scholars are undertake summer time attachment to an active researcher in recognized research centers in the country. A summer time attachment fee of Rs 20,000 will be paid to the mentoring institution for undertaking summer time project.

Duration of the Support: Selected candidates will be supported for a maximum period of five years starting 1st year course in BSc, BSc (Hons) and integrated course leading to MSc or the completion of the course, which ever is earlier.

Continuation of the scholarship for once selected candidates is based on satisfactory performance of the examinations conducted and certified by the institution imparting education.

Format for Application: All interested and eligible candidates must apply in the prescribed format along with attested copy of i) Mark sheets of Class X and Class XII and ii) Certificate from Principal of the College / Director or Registrar of the Institute or University where the applicant is presently enrolled.

Applications should reach by Ordinary Post only on or before 15th March 2009 and shall be addressed to the Director, National Institute of Science, Technology & Development Studies (NISTADS), Dr K S Krishnan Marg, New Delhi- 110012. The envelope should mention on top "Application for Scholarship for Higher Education (SHE)" program. This advertisement is also available at the website www.inspire-dst.gov.in
