KVPY FELLOWSHIPS for school and college students interested in research careers
The Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, offers attractive fellowships (Rs.4000 to Rs.7000 p.m) and contingency grants (equivalent of four months Fellowships) to students studying in XI standard to B.Sc / Integrated M.Sc., and I/II year of B.E./B.Tech/B.Arch/MBBS. Selection to the programme takes into account academic excellence and demonstrated interest in research. Selection is open to Indian nationals studying in India.
Eligibility
BASIC SCIENCES
• Stream SA : Students enrolled in XI Standard (Science Subjects) during the academic year 2008 – 2009 and who secured a minimum of 75% (65% for SC/ST) marks aggregate in Mathematics and Science subjects in X Standard Board Examination.
• Stream SB : Students enrolled in First Year B. Sc / Integrated M.Sc. during the academic year 2008 – 2009 and having secured a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST) marks aggregate in Mathematics & Science subjects in XII Standard Board Examination.
• SB + 2 (SX) : “Students of Class 12 (+2) of the academic year 2008 - 2009 who are aspiring to join IISER for Integrated M.S programme for the session August 2009 may take the KVPY Aptitude Test for the SB Stream provided they secured a minimum of 75% marks (65% for SC/ST) aggregate in Mathematics and Science subjects in X Standard Board Examination.
• Stream SP (Basic Sciences) : Students enrolled XI, XII Standard, I/II year of any UG programme in Basic Sciences during the academic year 2008-2009 and having secured a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST) marks in aggregate in X Standard and XII Board Examinations. A hard copy of the Science based research project is required along with the application.
ENGINEERING
• Stream SP (Engineering) : Students joining First/Second year B.E./ B.Tech./ B.Arch. during the academic year 2008-2009 and having secured a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST) marks in aggregate in X and XII Standard Board Examinations.
Students joining II year B.E./B.Tech./B.Arch. must have passed with a minimum of 60% marks (50% for SC/ST) in the I year exam of B.E./B.Tech. /B.Arch. A hard copy of the Science/Engineering based research project is required along with the application.
MEDICINE
• Stream SP (Medicine): Students joining First/Second professional year of MBBS programme during the academic year 2008-2009. Students must have passed the XII Standard Board Examination with 75% (65% for SC/ST) marks in aggregate in Science subjects or passed First Professional MBBS exam with not less than 60% (50% for SC/ST) marks. A hard copy of the Bio-Medical project is required along with the application.
GENERAL :
• Each Stream has its own application form. Students who wish to apply for more than one stream should submit separate applications.
• Applicants may apply either by Hard copy or Online.

• Application forms may be down loaded from the KVPY Website. Those who are unable to do so, may request for a Hard copy.
• Hard copy of the application form can be obtained from KVPY on request by sending a processing fee of Rs. 200/- (Rs. 100/- for SC/ST) by means of remitting Rs. 200 (Rs. 100/- for SC/ST) “to any core banking branches of STATE BANK OF INDIA, payable at all branches in India. Paid into the credit of Administrative Executive, KVPY A/c. No. 10270577392” and send the “pay-in-slip” along with the request, clearly indicating the stream (i.e.SA, SB, SP etc.,) on the request form.
(Applicants are instructed to down load the “pay-in-slip” from KVPY web site – www.iisc.ernet.in/kvpy )
• The SC/ST – candidates should provide a copy of the caste certificate issued by the competent authority in the prescribed proforma.
• The completed application form along with

II. A copy of the project report in the case of SP
III. Original pay-in-slip of Rs. 200/- (Rs. 100/- for SC/ST)
IV. Copy of the marks statement of the qualifying examination for Stream SP

1. | Mahindra All India Talent Scholarships for Diploma Courses in Polytechnics – 2008 |
K.C. Mahindra Education Trust, Mumbai, invites applications for Mahindra All India Talent Scholarships from students who have passed Std. X or Std. XII and have secured admissions this year in Government or recognised polytechnics for Diploma courses. Preference will be given to girl students, children from lower income group families, disabled children and children of armed forces personnel.
Scholarships of Rs. 5,000/- per year for a maximum period of 3 academic years will be awarded to selected students, to enable them to pursue diploma courses, for which they have secured admissions.

National Scholarship for Persons with Disabilities (2008-09)
Applications (in Hindi or English) in the prescribed proforma are invited from students with disabilities for financial assistance for pursuing higher and technical education. Eligibility conditions etc. for the Scholarship as follows:
Eligibility: -
(1) Financial assistance will be available to Indian students with at least 40% disabilities certified as per definition under Persons with Disabilities Act 1995.
(2) Financial assistance will be given for pursuing post-Matric/Post-Secondary technical and professional courses including Ph.D & M.Phil from recognized institutions. However, for students with disabilities of Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation, Multiple Disabilities, and Profound or Severe Hearing Impaired, the minimum educational qualification will be class VIII pass and scholarship will be awarded to them for pursuing general, technical, vocational or professional courses.
(3) Scholarship will be awarded to one student for pursuing only one course.
(4) Financial assistance can be given for computer with editing software for blind/ deaf graduate and postgraduate students pursuing professional courses and for support access software for cerebral palsied students.
(5) Continuation/ renewal of the award for next year will depend on successfully completing the course in the preceding year with minimum 50 (fifty) percent marks.
(6) The Assistance under this Scheme is not intended for Post-Matric/Post Secondary Technical/Professional courses having duration of less than one year.
(7) A scholarship holder under this scheme will not concurrently hold any other scholarship/stipend. If already any other scholarship/stipend awarded, the student is required to exercise his/her option for choosing the scholarship that he/she proposes to avail and inform awarding authority about the same.
(8) Monthly family income of the beneficiary should not be more than Rs. 15,000/- from all sources. Family income includes income of the parent/ guardian.

Upto five hundred awards are to be given annually through institutions in which students are pursuing studies/courses. Scholarship will be given to different categories of disabled students as under:
(1) Students with orthopedic disability
(2) Students with blindness or low vision
(3) Students with hearing disability
(4) Students with Cerebral palsy, Mental Retardation, Multiple Disabilities, Profound or Severe Hearing Impairment

The students will also be reimbursed the course fee subject to a ceiling of Rs.10,000/- per year.
Besides students living in the hostel/residential facility provided by the institutions, those students will also be considered as hostellers who live in accommodation hired at least by a group of 3 students living together with common mess arrangement. Such students will have to furnish a certificate in this regard countersigned by the head of the institution and a certificate from the owner of the house in case of own arrangement or accommodation taken on rent.
Applications for the award of scholarship will be countersigned and recommended by the head of the institution in which the applicant is enrolled for study. The last date for receipt of application for new cases as well as renewal/continuation is 15th July, 2008.

RAMALINGASWAMI FELLOWSHIP
Applications are invited for "Ramalingaswami Fellowship", a re-entry scheme of the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science & Technology, Govt. of India.
Objective
1. The scheme is aimed at bringing back scientists of Indian origin working outside the country in various fields of Biotechnology, including agriculture, health sciences, bio-engineering, energy, environment, bioinformatics and all other related areas and who are desirous of pursuing R&D in an Indian institution.
Eligibility
2. The applicant should possess a higher degree, such as Ph.D., MD or equivalent with an outstanding track record reflected in publications and other recognitions.
3. Only candidates of Indian origin working overseas are eligible to apply. Those who have already returned to India and are working in India are not eligible.
About the fellowship
4. Each awardee will receive the following:
(a) consolidated fellowship amount of Rs. 50,000/- p.m. for the first three years and Rs. 60,000/- p.m. for the next two years, and
(b) contingency grant of Rs. 5.00 Lakhs/year for one or more of the following: purchase of consumables, minor equipment, international and/or domestic travel, engaging manpower and other contingent expenditure to be incurred in connection with his or her research project.
However, the institute/university where the applicant proposes to work may consider giving additional benefits (such as house rent allowance/housing, medical expenses, leave travel allowance and other benefits) as applicable to regular faculty. This may be directly taken up by the applicants with the Indian institution that proposes to host them.
Duration
5. The duration of the fellowship will be for a period of five years.

6. Each awardee is expected to submit an annual progress report highlighting major achievements during the preceding year in which fellowship was awarded (1st April - 31st March) & will end the following March.
7. The Ramalingaswami Fellowship cannot be availed along with a regular salary in case the awardee finds a job either before or during the tenure of the fellowship, either the fellowship or the salary can be availed at one and the same time. However, the contingency grant can be availed with the salary after obtaining due permission from DBT.
8. Application should be routed through the Indian Institution where the awardee wishes to avail the fellowship.

To award Research Associateship and Junior Research Fellowships, applications are invited from candidates fulfilling the qualifications mentioned below initially for a period of two years [extendable as per rules only in cases of JRF].
1. Research Associates - (04)
Essential Qualifications: Ph.D. degree in Polymer Science/Rubber Technology / Chemical Engineering from a recognized university.
Desirable: Three years Research Experience in the field of Polymers Science/ Rubber Technology/Chemical Engineering and knowledge of computers.
2. Juniour Research Fellows - (03)
Essential Qualifications: M.Sc degree in Chemistry (Organic/ Inorganic) from a recognized University in first division wherever division or equivalent is awarded.
Desirable: NET Qualified & Knowledge of computers.
# The number of vacancies as above are tentative and may change as per requirement of the Establishment.
Maximum Age: For RA is 30 years and for JRF is 28 years as on last date fixed for receipt of completed application forms (5 years relaxation for SC/ST candidates & 3 years for OBC candidates).
Fellowship Stipend: Rs. 18,000/-p.m. for RA and Rs. 12,000/- p.m. for JRF.
Research Associates and Junior Research Fellows are also eligible for HRA as per Government rules. They are also eligible for a contingency grant of Rs. 10,000/- per year (on a reimbursement basis).
Research Associates and Junior Research Fellows are not eligible for other type of benefits like DA, CCA, Bonus, Retirement benefit etc. However, they are eligible for medical facilities, for self only available in DRDO.
Interested candidates fulfilling the above qualifications may apply in neatly typed format clearly indicating the name of the fellowship applied for, with a recent passport size photograph and Xerox copies of testimonials (along with Demand Draft for Rs.10/- drawn in favour of the Director, DMSRDE, Kanpur).
Candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC are exempted from the payment. The complete application should reach the Director, DMSRDE, DMSRDE PO, G.T. Road, Kanpur-208013 within 30 days from the date of publication of this advertisement.
Incomplete or application without Xerox copies of testimonials shall be summarily rejected. Applications are invited from the Indian Citizens for FIVE SCHOLARSHIPS for a course of study leading to a degree of the University of Oxford (UK) commencing from October 2009
Courses open to Rhodes Scholars
Subject to the consent of the college, a Scholar may read for the Oxford B.A. in any of Final Honour Schools. The Scholar may be admitted, if qualified by previous training to, read for a higher degree, such as the B.C.L, M.Lit., M.Sc, M.Phil., B.Phil. (for Philosophy) or D.Phil.
Rhodes Scholars-elect who wish to read for any degree (advanced or B.A.) or for a diploma in any Arts or Social Studies subjects (except the B.C.L. and the M.Sc. in Applied Social Studies) must submit two samples of recent written work. These should preferably, but not necessarily, be related to the intended subject of study. Candidates for graduate degree in Philosophy must submit essays on philosophy subjects. The samples should be of approximately 2000 words each, and may be essays or part of large works. These should be typed in English.
Conditions of Eligibility
1. The Scholarships are open to citizens of India.
2. Candidates must be of such an age that they will have passed their 19th and not have passed their 25th birthday on the 1st October 2009.
3. Candidates must have at least a first class degree in Humanities, Sciences, Law, Engineering, Agriculture or Medicine from an Indian University. <B>Candidates who are in the Final year of a degree course and have exceptionally bright academic record may also apply.
4. Candidates for medical studies should consult the Secretary, as well as the Medical School Offices at Oxford, before submitting an application. Particular difficulties may arise for those wishing to do research in clinical departments.
5. Marriage is not a bar to applying for, or holding, a Rhodes scholarship. However, married candidates should bear in mind that the scholarship stipend is sufficient only for one person, and that the Trust takes no financial responsibility for the support of a scholar`s spouse. Moreover, spouses who are not British citizens will find it very difficult to obtain permission to undertake paid work in England.
Subject to ratification by the Rhodes Trustees, the Committee of Selection for India is responsible for deciding whether candidates comply with forgoing conditions, and for making the nominations.
Method of Selection
Candidates are required to make an application by registered post to the Secretary of the Selection Committee, using the application form attached to this Memorandum or downloaded from the website. The material specified must be furnished before August 1st, 2008
In the normal course, applicants are short listed for a preliminary, personal interview, held at four regional centres including Mumbai (Pune), Bangalore, Kolkata and Delhi. Candidates selected from these regional interviews are then called for the final interview in December. No candidate can be selected without appearing for the final interview.
The granting of an interview is entirely within the discretion of the Selection Committee. Traveling expenses (2nd class return rail fare) of candidates invited for the final interview will be paid by the Rhodes Trust. Candidates for interview must bring with them their original certificates.
Candidates who do not receive any communication by December 1, 2008 must assume that their application has been unsuccessful.
Documents to be submitted by the candidates
i) Either a School leaving certificate or an extract from an University Register signed by the Registrar, as evidence of age (attested copy only, which will not be returned).
ii) Evidence of Courses taken and degrees, honour and other academic distinctions obtained. This evidence must be formally certified by Registrar or any other responsible officer of the candidate’s University (attested copies of certificates only, which will not be returned).
(a) A signed essay (preferably typed) by the candidate detailing the proposed course of study at Oxford, general interests and activities, including sports and the future aims of the candidate.
(b) The essay should not exceed 1000 words and should be in simple and direct English.
(c) Please take time and write this essay carefully because it essentially forms the basis for the candidate`s interview. The essay will be read not only by the Selection Committee but also by the Oxford Colleges to which the successful candidates apply for admission.
Procedure after Selection
On receiving of election a Scholar will be asked to state in order, the colleges to which the successful candidate would most wish to obtain admission. A special form for this purpose will be supplied to the Scholar-elect by the Secretary of the Selection Committee. This form should reach Rhodes House by 6th December, 2008. Any change of address of Scholar-elect should be communicated to the latter and to Rhodes House.
Copies of the Oxford University Prospectus, Graduate Studies Prospectus, and Examination Decrees and Regulations will be issued to each Rhodes Scholar-elect after the election. Detailed information regarding these is also available on University of Oxford`s website http://www.ox.ac.uk/. The Scholar will come into residence at Oxford in October, 2009. Postponement will not be sanctioned save in exceptional circumstances, and with the express permission of the Rhodes Trustees. The first installment of the Scholarship will be paid at the beginning of the Scholar`s first term at Oxford. No request for earlier payment will be considered.

Applications in the prescribed format are invited for renewal of Post Matric Scholarship 2007-08 for 2008-09 only from those students of minority communities who have been awarded scholarship during the year 2007-08 and have successfully completed the course in the preceding year. The name of the awarded students for the year 2007-08 has been displayed on the website of this Deptt. www.scstwelfare.delhigovt.nic.in .
Applications in the prescribed format (available on www.minorityaffairs.gov.in or www.scstwelfare.delhigovt.nic.in ) along with requisite documents should be submitted to the Head of the Institution being attended or last attended by the student for further submission to the Dy. Dr. D.C. Pavate Memorial Fellowships in Cambridge - 2009
The Dr. D.C. Pavate Foundation in collaboration with Karnatak University, Dharwad and Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge offer three visiting fellowships annually for a period of four months to be held at the Centre of International Studies, Judge Business School and the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, University of Cambridge.
Candidates below the age of 40 years as on 1st January 2009, who have secured a Ph.D., or a first class Masters Degree or its equivalent are eligible to apply for the following fellowships:
(a) One fellowship at the Centre of International Studies, Cambridge, selected on all India basis: The fellowship will be effective from September 2009. Candidates with good academic record in the areas of History, Political Science, International Economics, International Law or Military Affairs will be Considered.
(b) One fellowship at Judge Business School, Cambridge, selected from among Karnataka Candidates: This fellowship will be effective from January 2009. Candidates from Karnataka with good academic record and interest in any aspect of Indian business and management will be considered.
(c) One fellowship at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, Cambridge, selected from among Karnataka Candidates: This fellowship will be effective from May 2009. Candidates from Karnataka with good academic record in the area of applied mathematics and theoretical physics will be considered. The selection and award is subject to the Department identifying a host research group accepting the successful candidate.
Karnataka Candidate:
(i) Educated for a minimum of 5 years continuously at an educational institution located in Karnataka, or
(ii) employed in Kamataka for a minimum of 5 years continuously.
The fellowships will cover economy class return air fare, stipend of 3500 pounds sterling and 2700 pounds sterling academic Charges.
