Central Institute of Educational Technology (CIET)

With an aim to provide and promote educational technology especially at the school level, Central Institute of Educational Technology (CIET) was set up in 1984 as an integral part of National Council of Educational Research & Training (NCERT).The organization has been accorded the status of an autonomous body and works under the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.The institute not only designs, develops, and publicizes alternative learning systems to fulfill the national objective of universalisation of primary education but also addresses diverse educational problems at micro and macro levels.

It also carries out the following

  • Designing and fabricating media software – television/radio (for broadcast and non-broadcast use) film, graphics and other programmes for intensification, the transaction of curricular and co-curricular activities at the school level.
  • Generating competencies in development and use of educational software materials mentioned above through training in areas such as script development, media production, media communication, media research, technical operations, setting up studios, repair and maintenance of equipments etc.
  • Training the faculty of Institutes of Advanced Study in Education/Colleges of Teacher Education and District Institutes of Education and Training in the use of Educational Technology in their teacher education programmes.
  • Carrying out research appraisal and monitoring of the systems, programmes and materials with a view to improve the materials and increasing their effectiveness.
  • Documenting and disseminating information, materials and media programmes for better use and to function as a clearing house/agency in the field of Educational Technology.
  • Directing and coordinating the academic and technical programmes and activities of the SIET set up by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) Government of India in six states of India.
