For many of us, R.K Laxman’s cartoons in the news papers are the first eye-grabber.Cartoons have the ability to carry wit, satire and punch all in one message. A cartoon can be described as a political and social observation on the happenings about the time during which it is drawn. In simple words, a cartoonist job is to hold a mirror to the society.

Undoubtedly, today cartoon journalism has emerged as powerful platform to raise the voices of the masses.
Today every region in India has its own breed of cartoonists who have become cult figures among their readers. Newspapers just can’t do without these witty warriors who use the weapon of humour to tackle grim problem.

Cartoon in India has a very long history. This entered the scene with the British, but over the years, established their importance as an independent version of the masses. The Late K Shankar Pillai is considered as the Father of Indian Cartooning.

Globally speaking, today cartoons, as a powerful communication tool have cut across all media obstructions and emerged as effective tools of disseminating messages to the masses. Also the today’s audio-visual media, internet, films, multimedia, advertisements, hoardings all rely on cartoons to spread messages for the public.

Cartoonist Eligibility Criteria

  • Age- No minimum age and no maximum age.
  • Educational Qualification- to make a mark in this field, one does not require a formal qualification. The most important attribute for this field is the ability to bring out humour out of issues of serious nature.

Cartoonist Personal Skills

A cartoonist must possess an excellent sense of humour and be artistically inclined too. Aspirants for this field should be very creative and full of imagination. They should also have the ability of lateral thinking. They should also be adept in coming out with new ideas and putting those ideas into sketches.

Working for a newspaper, requires a ability to work under pressure .as Most of the work of cartoonists is now done with the aid of computers a cartoonist should be computer-savvy too.

There are ample avenues in this field due to ongoing boom in media and animation industry.

Beginners get around Rs.10, 000 to Rs.15, 000 per month and if they become popular their salary keeps multiplying and with some experience and real talent, one can surely hope to rise quickly in this profession.
