Indian Economic Services/ Indian Statistical Services Examination (IES Exam / ISS Exam)

Highlights

The Indian Statistical Service (ISS) and the Indian Economic Service (IES) are central government services and offer very attractive openings to those who have a keen interest to be a part of the Indian economic policy formulation team. Planning and preparing well in advance, an aspirant might enter these services by taking the Indian Economic Service (IES) or the Indian Statistical Service (ISS) examination.

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) New Delhi conducts the Indian Economic/Statistical Services Examination in the month of November to recruit officers for the Indian Statistical Service (ISS) and Indian Economic Service (IES).

Candidates who successfully pass this examination are placed in the planning commission, planning board, ministry of economic affairs, national sample survey and other allied offices where specialists in economics and statistics are required.

This year, the UPSC will be conducting the combined exam for recruitment to Junior Time Scale for both these services (IES & ISS) on 7th April 2021 . The details of other important dates are given on the IES/ ISS exam dates page.

Eligibility Criteria

Age:

A candidate aspiring for the IES / ISS service must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 30 years. The upper age limit is relaxable for the scheduled tribes and scheduled castes (by 5 years), other backwards classes (by 3 years), candidates domiciled in J&K between 1980 & 1989 (by 5 years), defence services personnel disabled in operations (by 3 years), ex-servicemen/ commissioned officers/ ECOs or SSCOs (by 5 years) and blind/ deaf-mute/ orthopaedically handicapped persons (by 10 years.)

Educational Qualification:

For Indian Economic Service: Post-graduate degree in Economics/ Applied Economics/ Business Economics/ Econometrics from a recognised university/ institute established by an act of the parliament/ foreign university recognised periodically by the central government.

For Indian Statistical Service: Bachelors degree with Statistics/ Mathematical Statistics/ Applied Statistics as one of the subject
or
Master’s degree in Statistics/ Mathematical Statistics/ Applied Statistics from a recognised university/ institute established by an act of the parliament/ foreign university recognised periodically by the central government.

Note: Candidates appearing in qualifying degree exams are also eligible provisionally subject to producing proof of passing along with Detailed Application Form.

Nationality:

A candidate must be either :
(a) A citizen of India, or
(b) a subject of Nepal, or
(c) a subject of Bhutan, or
(d) a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before 1st January, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or
(e) a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Srilanka or East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia or from Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

Physical Standards:

Candidates must be physically fit according to physical standards for admission to Indian Economic Service/Indian Statistical Service Examination as per the regulations specified by the commission.

IES / ISS Examination Centres 2022

Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) New Delhi will be conducting the IES / ISS examination in the following cities / towns:

Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Allahabad, Jammu, Bangalore, Kolkata, Bhopal, Lucknow, Chandigarh, Mumbai, Chennai, Patna, Cuttack, Shillong, Delhi, Shimla, Dispur, Thiruvananthapuram and Hyderabad

You must apply as early as possible to get a centre of your choice.

How to prepare for IES / ISS Exam?

  • Study thoroughly through text books and practice writing model answers.
  •  Get hold of previous years’ question papers and try formulating correct and precise answers.
  • You have to be proficient in English, as the questions are set and to be answered only in ENGLISH
  • For the General English Paper, practice comprehensions, essays, précis and vocabulary exercises from any standard grammar/Civil Services examination handbook
  • Your answers should be analytical, precise, logical and systematic.
  • Basic preparations should be made from good text books, with additional backup from a variety of sources e.g. journals, newspapers, topical essays, websites, etc.
  •  Legible and neat handwriting will definitely enhance the quality of a well-presented precise answer.
