The University of North Bengal was established by Act of the Legislature of West Bengal in 1962 with the objective of promoting the dissemination of knowledge to fulfill growing socio-economic and technical manpower needs in the six North Bengal districts and the neighbouring state of Sikkim. The campus covers an area of about 330 acres 9 km outside Siliguri and Bagdogra Airport in the Terai region of Darjeeling district. It is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and by NAAC.
 
The Directorate of Distance Education (DDE) of NBU (NBUDDE) is recognized and accredited by the Distance Education Council. NBUDDE provides quality post graduate courses in seven subjects, namely, M.A. in Bengali, Nepali, English, Philosophy, Political Science and History and M.A./M.Sc. in Mathematics to students of any location and age.

The Medium of Instruction at NBUDDE is English except for M.A. course in Bengali. The self-instructional materials will be supplied in English only except for the language subjects. At the time of examination, the candidates can write their answers in English or Bengali only.

The college provides courses in Anthropology, Botany, Chemistry, Computer Science etc for Master’s in Science. For other degrees they have MA in Bengali, Hindi, English; they have courses in law and management along with PG courses in management, marketing etc.

North Bengal University Distance Education Admissions

The complete procedure for admission into this university is online. The students have to keep digital copies of their passport size photos in the size limit mentioned by the college. Along with it they should have a digital signature in blue or black pen. At the time of online form filling, the candidate has to send the required fee amount via Debit or Credit card, or use net banking. The procedure is completely online so the applicants are advised not to take the printouts and submit it in the university, it will not be accepted. However, the applicants can keep the printout for their reference. Later, the applicants are supposed to bring all the supporting documents at the time of verification. If any of the details do not match, the student’s candidature will be cancelled.
