INTRODUCTION

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) offers Doctor of Philosophy – Ph.D. programme in a wide number of disciplines. The duration of Ph.D. programme is 2-5 years. The programme is offered in the following faculties-

SELECTION CRITERIA

All candidates willing to take admission into the Ph.D. programme are required to face a Test/Interview. The final selection is made on the basis of academic records and performance in the Test/Interview.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Ph.D. in Engineering

  • Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology (ME/MS/MTech) with minimum 60% marks or a CGPA of 6.5 or equivalent.
    OR
  • Master’s degree in science (MSc) with minimum 60% marks or CGPA of 6.5 or equivalent with NET (CSIR/UGC) or GATE score.

Ph.D. in Science and Humanities

Master’s degree in Sciences/Social Sciences/Commerce and Humanities subjects with a first class or a minimum of 60% marks or equivalent ( CGPA 6.5 ) with avalid GATE score or NET (UGC/CSIR) Fellowship from the current year in relevant areas.

Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology/MBA of IIMS or equivalent with first class or minimum 60% marks or equivalent for certain areas.

Important : Candidates with background and qualifications in allied Engineering subjects other than those specifically mentioned above may also be considered for admission to Ph.D programme with the recommendation of the concerned department and with the approval of the Senate.

Admission of B.Tech./B.E. candidates in to Doctoral programme

Candidates who have passed BE/BTech degree with exceptional performance are considered for admission to Ph.D. programme in the relevant discipline. Such candidates are entitled to receive a Half-time Teaching/ Research Assistanship of Rs 5,000/- p.m.

The admission of such candidates are subject to following conditions-

If the Candidate happens to be a B.Tech degree holder from an IIT, he/she should have passed the degree programme in the top 25% of his/her branch.

In the case of Bachelor’s degree holder in Engineering or Technology from a University, he/she should have qualified for the degree among the top 10 rank holders of the University.

The Candidate must be eligible for admission to Post-graduate programme with a valid GATE score.

Full-time candidates alone are eligible to be considered for such direct admission.

ASSISTANTSHIP

  • Assistanship for Regular (Full Time) Scholars:
    Regular full time scholar admitted to Ph.D. programme may be entitled to earn a Half Time Teaching/Research Assistantship (HTRA). The candidates require working 8 Hours per week in the department to earn this assistantship. The renewal of assistantship will be subject to continuous good academic performance of candidate. The following are the rates of assistantship:
  • Ph.D in Engineering: Rs 6,000/- p.m.
  • Ph.D in Science/Humanities & Social Sciences: Rs 5,000/- p.m.

After 2 years, the HTRA of Rs 6,000/- and Rs 5,000/- p.m will be increased to Rs 6,400/- and Rs 5,600/- p.m for the Engineering and Science/Humanities scholars respectively.

In addition to the Institute HTRA, other fellowships are also available. Candidates may be aconsidered for award of these Fellowships subject to fulfilling certain conditions.

  • Admission without Assistanship

The admission to Ph.D. programme without assistantship is also available. The eligibility criteria for admission are same as that for HTRA candidates.

Project Staff Admission


The candidates involved in Consultancy Projects/Sponsored Research in Centers/Departments of IIT Madras as Project Staff or those who are in the process of applying for such projects are eligible to apply for the Ph.D. programme. The minimum qualification criterion for such candidates is same as that for Ph.D. in Engineering or Ph.D. in Science and Humanities.
