CAT 2017: Slot I & Slot II Analysis
The Common Aptitude Test (CAT) 2017 was conducted yesterday, November 26, 2017 in two slots, i.e. Morning Slot (9 a.m. to 12 noon) and Evening Slot (2.30 pm to 5.30 pm). The overall difficulty level in both these slots was similar with no new surprises compared to the one conducted last year. The first section to attempt was Verbal (34 questions) divided into Reading Comprehension (24 questions) and Verbal Ability (10 questions). The second section was Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DI-LR: 16 questions each, i.e. 32 questions in total). The third and final section was Quantitative Ability (34 questions). The total duration of the exam was 3 hours with one hour completely devoted to each section. Once the time was up for each section, one could not go back to it in case a question was missed.
The marking system was similar to the one in 2015 with +3 marks for every correct answer and -1 mark for every incorrect answer. For Type in the Answer (TITA) questions, there was no negative marking.

Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension
The difficulty level of the Verbal and Reading Comprehension questions was between easy and moderate. The distribution of MCQs and non-MCQs was similar in both the slots.
Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning
This section was considered the most tough and difficult among all the 3 sections. Since it was difficult, most students found this section to be time consuming as well. Data Interpretation had 16 questions to answer and the same was the case with Logical Reasoning.
Quantitative Ability
In Slot I, the difficulty level of the Quantitative Ability questions was between moderate to difficult. There were a couple of questions that were wrong. However, IIMs ignore these questions during evaluation thus recognizing the errors and rectifying them.
In Slot II, the questions asked were more difficult than the ones asked last year and even in the morning slot this year. Algebra, Geometry, Arithmetic, Modern Maths and Number Systems were the topics included under Quantitative Ability.
