Bachelor of Dental Sciences (BDS) is a well-reputed field that is considered to be one of the top medical graduates. It is a course that is held after the completion of the 10+2 level of the education.This course is said to be the gateway to many great careers in medicine. The course is also known as Bachelor of Dental Surgery, which is generally abbreviated as BDS.

A Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) degree is required in order to go on to become a dentist in India. The length of the program is generally about five years (four years of classes, and one year thereafter dedicated to a compulsory rotating internship). The cost of the program varies depending on the institution one attends, but at a private college the fees are generally considerably higher, around 10 to 12 lakh, while studying at a government medical college is usually much lower.

Eligibility criteria to pursue a BDS program

Students interested in pursuing a BDS degree in India must be at least 17 years of age at time of admission, and are required to complete the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC), or 10+2 exam, in the science stream, with biology, chemistry, physics, and English, with a minimum of 50 percent marks in each course. There is only one entrance exam for the country of India that is nationally recognized. This examination is named NEET and is held as a centralized test administered in June every year.

Admission Process

Candidates interested in applying for the BDS program either at government or private institutions must qualify the entrance test. They will have to fill out an online application form within the given deadline and participate in the NEET exam. The exam is held once a year (in May). Those who pass the cutoff are made eligible to take part in NEET counseling. Seats are allocated on the basis of rank, choice filled by candidate, availability of seats, and reservation criteria.
