USIEF Fulbright Nehru Fellowship 2018 - 2019

The United States-India Educational Foundation, USIEF, provides exchange opportunities and scholarships to students, teachers and scholars, and for those who seek programs to enable professional growth. Student Awards are awarded to students who plan to pursue a Master’s degree in the US, or as a visiting student researcher. The Scholars and Teacher Awards are for academicians, teachers, and professionals to teach or research in the US and the Professional Development Programs are to inculcate values like leadership and to develop strong set of skills.

Fulbright Nehru Master's Fellowship Programmes

You can apply for any ONE Fulbright-Nehru fellowship in one year.

A) Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Fellowships

This fellowship is designed for Indians residing in India who want to pursue a Master’s degree programme in the following areas:

  • Arts and Cultural Management including Heritage Conservation and Museum Studies
  • Environmental Science/Studies
  • Higher Education Administration
  • Public Health
  • Urban and Regional Planning
  • Women’s Studies/Gender Studies

The fellowship will be granted to individuals who demonstrate excellent leadership qualities and show high self-motivational skills. The period of the fellowship is between one and two years. You should have completed the Indian equivalent of an American Bachelor’s degree, have worked for at least three years in the field you are applying for, and have the commitment to return to India and give back with increased vigour and zeal.

The fellowship provides the below benefits:

  • J-1 visa support
  • Two-way Economy class air travel from home city to host city in the US
  • Funding for tuition, fees, and most living-related costs
  • Accident and Sickness Program for Exchanges as governed by the guidelines set by the US Government

B) Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowships

This fellowship is granted to Indian scholars who have registered for a Ph.D programme in an Indian institution and this fellowship is for a period of 6-9 months and is only for pre-doctoral level research. You’re not eligible if you already have a Ph.D or are in the final stage of the Ph.D thesis submission.

The fellowship provides the below benefits:

  • Accident and Sickness Program for Exchanges as governed by the guidelines set by the US Government
  • A monthly stipend
  • Two-way Economy class air travel
  • Affiliation fees and applicable allowances

The grant is insufficient to support family members.

C) Fulbright-Nehru Academic and Professional Excellence Fellowships

This is a 4-9 month fellowship which provides Indian teachers, researchers, and professionals with the opportunity to teach, carry out research, or a combination of both researching and lecturing at an institution in the US. Contributing to curriculum development and seminars may even take place, depending upon the institution. You will only be affiliated to ONE institution, and so, you will have to identify which one you wish to be affiliated to. Correspond in advance, and if you secure an invitation letter from the institution, include it with your online application.

Lecturing

The recipient of this fellowship will be affiliated as a visiting scholar at an institution in the US, and will teach either individually or as part of a team, for either a semester or an academic year.

Research

If you’re applying as a researcher, you must show the relevance of the research to India and/or the US, the benefit it provides to the institution, a timeline that shows the feasibility of achieving the goals of the research within the stipulated time, and the importance of why this research has to be done in the US.

Lecturing and Research

You can apply for a fellowship that combines lecturing and researching. While applying, your project statement should show the allocation, like if you plan to spend 55% of your grant researching and 45% on teaching. Teaching can be done as a series of seminars, or you can teach individual or team courses.

D) Fulbright-Nehru Postdoctoral Research Fellowships

This fellowship is for Indian teachers and researchers, and provides and opportunity to strengthen research capacities by building long-term collaborative relationships with faculty in the US and by giving access to resources.

You will only be affiliated to ONE institution, and so, you will have to identify which one you wish to be affiliated to. Correspond in advance, and if you secure an invitation letter from the institution, include it with your online application.

The fellowships C & D provides the below benefits:

  • Accident and Sickness Program for Exchanges as governed by the guidelines set by the US Government
  • A monthly stipend
  • Two-way Economy class air travel
  • Settling-in Allowance
  • Professional Allowance
  • If funds are available, in case of eight- or nine-month grants, a dependent allowance and international travel for one eligible dependent to accompany you, provided the dependent will be with you for more than 80% of the grant period.

The fellowships B, C & D will be considered only in the following fields:

  1. Agricultural Sciences
  2. Education, especially technology-enabled learning, skill building, and faculty development
  3. Energy Studies
  4. International Trade Economics
  5. Public Health Policy and Management
  6. Science and Technology (Bio-Engineering, Climate Change Sciences, Computer and Mathematical Sciences and Neurosciences)
  7. Strategic Studies
  8. Studies of India (language, literature, linguistics, history, and visual and performing arts)
  9. Study of the United States (language, literature, linguistics, history, and visual and performing arts)
  10. Women’s and Gender Studies, especially public policy for gender parity

E) Fulbright-Nehru International Education Administrators Seminar

This fellowship is targeted at mid-level to senior level faculty and administrators from institutions of education in India and aims to provide opportunities to experience in institutions in the United States. The official announcement for this will be made in the second half of 2017.

Eligibility Criteria/Qualifications

Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Fellowship

  • You should have completed the Indian equivalent of a four-year US Bachelor’s degree with at least 55% as the overall grade, from a recognized Indian university. If the course completed is less than four years, a Master’s degree is compulsory.
  • You should have at least three years of full-time professional experience, working in the field of the discipline you propose to study further in.
  • Leadership quality is a must, and you must have demonstrated this, along with participation in community service.
  • You should not already possess a degree from any US university or be enrolled in a degree program from the US.
  • If you are employed, the employer must validate that leave will be granted for the period of the fellowship, and this must be shown. Obtain the Fulbright-Nehru Employer’s Endorsement Form and read through carefully.

Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowships

  • You should have done sufficient research in the field you are applying to, particularly in identification of resources in India and the US.
  • You should have registered for the Ph.D programme at least one year prior to applying.
  • While applying online, you must upload a letter from your Ph.D supervisor, indicating the Ph.D registration date and topic. The letter should also comment on your research and how the fellowship is necessary.
  • Your Ph.D thesis submission date should not be earlier than three months after your fellowship grant ends, so if your grant ends May 2018, your Ph.D thesis submission date cannot be before August 2018.
  • If you are employed, the employer must validate that leave will be granted for the period of the fellowship, and this must be shown. Obtain the Fulbright-Nehru Employer’s Endorsement Form and read through carefully.
  • A ‘writing sample’, like a copy of an article or paper from your M.Phil thesis should be uploaded while applying.

Fulbright-Nehru Academic and Professional Excellence Fellowships

  • You should have a Ph.D degree or an equivalent published work with at least five years of relevant experience teaching or researching.
  • A Master’s degree or an equivalent published work which is recognized and with professional standing, with five years relevant experience.
  • Upload a recent significant publication along with the online application.
  • If you are employed, the employer must validate that leave will be granted for the period of the fellowship, and this must be shown. Obtain the Fulbright-Nehru Employer’s Endorsement Form and read through carefully

Fulbright-Nehru Postdoctoral Research Fellowships

  • Between July 2013 and June 2018, you should have obtained your Ph.D degree, details of which must be uploaded in the online application.
  • You must be published in journals of repute, to demonstrate evidence of excellent academic and professional achievement.
  • A recent significant publication must be uploaded along with the online application.
  • If you are employed, the employer must validate that leave will be granted for the period of the fellowship, and this must be shown. Obtain the Fulbright-Nehru Employer’s Endorsement Form and read through carefully.
  • Along with the application, you will need to indicate the period in which you plan to complete the project in the US. If you are selected for the grant, your grant will be as per the period you specified, and once submitted, this cannot be changed.

Application Procedure

All applications must be done only online. Unless specified otherwise, the application form must be completed and sent as an e-mail attachment. You should also keep a printed copy of the application and sign it. If you are not employed, forward the signed copy to the USIEF office closest to you. If you are employed, you should forward the signed copy, (including enclosures) through the appropriate administrative authority In case you are employed by the central or state government, the application must be forwarded through the cadre controlling authority.

  • All applications must reach USIEF by the application deadline, and any incomplete or late application, or any application which has not been forwarded through the proper channel will not be considered.
  • Three referees are to be chosen to send in their recommendations.
  • All entries in the application form must be computer-generated, and not hand-written.
  • The word limit must be adhered to, and attaching additional sheets will not be entertained.
