Busy Birds with Busy Beaks

Birds use their beaks as tools for locating food.

Beaks that scoop up a bucket of seawater and sometimes a bucket of yummy fish !

Pelicans are large birds that are found along sea coasts. They have long flat beaks with huge pouches near the throat. They use their beaks to scoop out fish from the water.

Some beaks dive deep into flowers to suck  nectar.

Hummingbirds are very very tiny birds. They fly so fast that it looks like they have no wings ! These birds live in open areas where trees and gardens are found. They suck the nectar from flowers using their long thin tongues which are inside their needle-like beaks.

Woodpeckers use their straight and pointed beaks as drilling machines. They bore l holes in trees in search of yummy insects. They poke their long, sticky tongues into the holes and drag out the insects. They are generally found in forests.

Flamingos live in salty marshes. Their beaks look bent and are lined with little ridges. These birds wade through shallow pools with their heads under water in search of food. They also use their beaks as filters to strain small creatures of the water.

Mallards are ducks that live near rivers, lakes and marshy land. They dive deep into ponds and search for insects and small creatures. They use their short and flat bills to eat the seeds and grass growing near  the marshes.
