BITSAT - BITS Admission Test

An Overview

BITSAT – Birla Institute of Technology & Science Admission Test is held every year for admission into undergraduate engineering, sciences, and technology degree programs in Birla Institute of Technology & Science (BITS) Pilani. The institute is located in Pilani town of Rajasthan State in India. BITS Pilani is a university; its programs and courses are approved from University Grants Commission (UGC) of India, All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) New Delhi and all other educational apex bodies of government and industry.

BITS Pilani has 3 campuses in India. Besides main Pilani Campus, BITS has campuses in Goa and Hyderabad. Under Graduate programs are offered in all 3 campuses on the basis of score in BITSAT. Besides BITS Pilani also offers many postgraduate and other programs.

BITS Pilani calls undergraduate programs ‘Integrated First Degree Programs.’ A range of programs are offered in this category, viz; Bachelors of Engineering (B.E)- Hons.; Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm)- Hons.; Master of Sciences (M.Sc) both Hons. and Tech. and couple of Dual Degree programs under which both Bachelor and Master degree is awarded together. The degrees earned from BITS Pilani are considered equivalent to degrees awarded from any other recognized university or institution. BITS Pilani is a Deemed University and comes under the purview of Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) of Government of India.

BITSAT is taken by students aspiring for career in engineering, sciences, technology and research. The minimum eligibility criteria for taking BITSAT is 10 2 level of qualification in sciences stream with minimum 80% marks and proficiency in English. BITSAT gives importance to marks obtained in academic qualification and asks for minimum 60% marks in individual subjects viz; physics, chemistry and mathematics, as BITS Pilani expects high level of competency for learning sciences and interest for research and innovation in learners. Candidates with overall brilliant academic record and those who topped in qualifying examination may exempt from BITSAT and apply for direct admission. However, such candidates may also take BITSAT.  Candidates who have passed qualifying examination prior to two years of BITSAT are not allowed to take the examination.

BITSAT is a 3 hour Computer Based Examination held in various cities across India. It’s an ONLINE Computer Based Test scheduled on different test dates generally in the summer months from May to June. No specific computer proficiencies requires for writing the BITSAT Examination. Candidates are tested in the areas of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, English and Logical Reasoning. Test is Objective Type / Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) Type where candidates are given 4 responses against each question to chose best one. 150 questions are asked in total.

On the basis of score in BITSAT merit rank of candidates is prepared by BITSAT Administration. Candidates are called for counseling to choose streams, course and institute.

The First Degree Programs offered by BITS Pilani are residential in nature. Candidates are required living in Hostels. BITS has separate hostels for men and women added with necessary facilities like food mess, canteen, medical care facilities, telephone connections, high speed internet, entertainment facilities, facilities for sports & games and extracurricular facilities. BITS has magnificent Central Library, all BITS faculties owns departmental library. Since BITS is a residential university, faculty members also lives within the campus, this gives added advantage to learners as BITS faculty members are available any time anywhere.

The ideal time to start preparing for BITSAT is right after class 10th Boards examinations. BITSAT syllabus is drawn from syllabi of class 11th and 12th standard board but level of questions are little higher. Those aspiring for BITSAT must have to put additional practice hours for BITSAT preparation. Students need to practice whole range of objective type questions in according to BITSAT Syllabus. One needs solid understanding of sciences and mathematics of class 9th and 10th standard to start preparing for BITSAT.  The BITSAT notification for filling of application form generally issued in the month of December every year.
