Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) 2016

Started in 1999, the Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) is a fellowship program for students of basic sciences who wish to pursue a career in scientific research. The main aim of the Department of Science and Technology, which launched this program, is to attract young talented minds who have an aptitude for scientific research and studies and help them realise their full potential.

The scholarship is pretty generous and supports students till the pre-Ph.D level. In addition to this, summer programmes are also arranged for the students at elite research and education institutions across India. Candidates also get to access the best of libraries and lab facilities, various museums etc.

The KVPY program is coordinated by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc.), Bangalore, and its activities are monitored by a Management Committee and National Advisory Committee (NAC).

Scholarship details

The fellowships bestowed towards students are as follows:

SA/SX/SB: B.Sc., B.S., B.Stat., B.Math., integrated M.Sc./M.S. students in first, second or third year. A monthly stipend of Rs.5000 and an annual contingency grant of Rs.20,000 is given to each student.

SA/SX/SB: M.Sc., 4th year, or 5th year students specializing in the fields of integrated M.Sc. /M.S./M.Math./M.Stat. A monthly stipend of Rs.7000 and an annual contingency grant of Rs.28,000 is granted to each student.

Eligibility criteria

Students who are eligible to apply for the KVPY fellowship must be Indian nationals who want to pursue their research studies in India. They must be currently enrolled students of basic sciences in standard XI (Stream SA), XII (Stream SX) or undergraduation (Stream SB).

In the current academic year, the eligibility criteria for each stream is as follows:

Stream SA: Students must be enrolled in Standard XI (Science) for the academic year 2015-2016 and have secured a minimum aggregate of 80% in mathematics and science in the Standard X Board examination (70% for SC/ST/PWD).

Stream SX:Students must be enrolled in Standard XII (+2) (Science) for the academic year 2015-2016 and secured a minimum aggregate of 80% in mathematics and science subjects in the Standard X Board Examination (70% for SC/ST/PWD) and a minimum aggregate of 60% in science subjects (physics/chemistry/biology) in the Standard XII Board Examination (50% for SC/ST/PWD).

Stream SB: Students must be enrolled in the first year undergraduate program in basic sciences, namely physics, chemistry, mathematics or biology for the academic year 2015-2016 and have secured a minimum aggregate of 60% in science subjects (physics/chemistry/biology/mathematics) in the Standard XII Board Examination (50% for SC/ST/PWD).

Under a special empowerment initiative, the fellowship has set aside grants for science students belonging to the SC/ST community and persons with disability (physically and visually challenged).

Selection criteria

Once you meet the basic eligibility requirements and fill up the application, the final selection is made based on the following screening criteria:

  • Aptitude Test: All eligible students must go through a written aptitude test (conducted in Hindi and English). The test is held across different centers in major cities in India. The test is held online in metro cities and some selected cities. In other cities it will be held offline (paper-based). The cut off marks for the aptitude test varies for each stream:

Stream SA
General – 43 marks out of 100  
SC/ST – 32 marks out of 100
PWD (Person with disability) – 32 marks out of 100

Stream SB
General – 50 marks out of 100  
SC/ST -34 marks out of 100
PWD (Person with disability) – 34 marks out of 100

Stream SX
General – 54 marks out of 100  
SC/ST – 40 marks out of 100
PWD (Person with disability) – 40 marks out of 100

  • Interview: Once a student clears the Aptitude Test, they will have to appear for an interview, which is the final screening process for selection.
