Animation and Filmmaking Courses

According to a report by NASSCOM, the animation industry in India is growing, and demand will continue to grow. In this era, where animation is a part of education, medical sciences, multimedia, Internet, simulation and filmmaking, there may be a lot of scope for students who aspire to aim at this field. Major animation houses like Walt Disney, Pixar Studios and Turner Entertainment which make animated films, ads and games are turning to India. Advertising is not only restricted to television, but also reaches the masses worldwide through the Internet. If you are creative or want to get into a career in TV, film, gaming and simulations, a course in animation and film making could be a first step. The minimum qualification for these courses is twelfth grade graduation.

An animation and filmmaking course delves into an intense study of 2-D and 3-D animation, sound editing, pre production and post production processes, visual effects and filmmaking. Course duration can vary from six months to about three years. After the completion of a certification degree, diploma or degree course, students can find work as animators, digital designers, effects (FX) artists, lighting artists and rigging artists. Students can find opportunities to work in animation film production studios, for television channels, in television production houses, in advertising agencies and gaming companies. Students might also find work in print media, communication, comic art, 3-D motion painting, multimedia companies, Web design companies or the automobile industry.

Course Curriculum for Animation and Film Making

 

The bachelor’s program in animation and filmmaking generally covers cinematography, stop motion, compositing, character setup and skinning and sound editing. It also typically entails lighting and rendering, storyboarding, digital design, modelling and texturing, character animation and particle and dynamics. The concepts on non-linear editing and filmmaking are usually covered as well, along with the preproduction process. Visual scripting with film language, acting and voicing for animation, photographic technique and digital sketching are usually part of this course. Classical animation, an overview of visual effects (VFX), editing, clay animation, preproduction and postproduction process of film and television are also subjects that may be covered. Software like Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Sound Booth and Autodesk 3dsmax are some of the popular ones used. The Diploma in Animation Engineering (DAE), Diploma in Animation Film Making (DAFM) and the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Animation and Filmmaking are common courses which students generally prefer to pursue. Subjects and course curriculum vary between colleges, so it is advisable to read through the syllabus while choosing between courses.
