50 New Medical Colleges in India; Addition of 8195 UG seats

According to official sources, it has been reported that this year, a total of 50 new medical colleges have received approval. This development has resulted in an increase of 8,195 undergraduate seats, bringing the total number of such seats in the country to over 1,07,658.Â
The sources further state that out of these 50 colleges, 30 are government institutions and 20 are privately owned. Consequently, the country’s overall count of medical colleges has now reached 702. The approved medical colleges are distributed across various states including Telangana, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Nagaland, Maharashtra, Assam, Karnataka, Gujarat, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh, as per the sources.
According to sources, the Under-Graduate Medical Education Board of the National Medical Commission (NMC) has withdrawn recognition from 38 medical colleges across the country in the past two-and-a-half months. These colleges were found to allegedly not meet the prescribed standards during inspections. Additionally, show-cause notices have been issued to 102 other medical colleges, as stated by the sources.
Out of the 38 colleges, 24 have appealed to the NMC, while six have approached the health minister. These colleges that have lost recognition are given an opportunity to appeal once with the NMC and then with the health ministry, provided they rectify the deficiencies and inadequacies. The sources mention that the inspections carried out by the UG board of the commission revealed non-compliance with the established norms and identified various lapses concerning CCTV cameras, Aadhaar-linked biometric attendance procedures, and faculty rolls.
As per government statistics, there has been a noteworthy surge in the count of medical colleges across the country since 2014. The Union Minister of State for Health, Bharati Pravin Pawar, informed the Rajya Sabha in February that there has been a 69 percent rise in the number of medical colleges. Prior to 2014, the count stood at 387, whereas at present, it has reached 654.
Moreover, there has been a substantial increase in the number of MBBS seats, with a growth of 94 percent. The count has escalated from 51,348 before 2014 to 99,763 at present. Additionally, there has been a remarkable 107 percent rise in the number of post-graduate seats, from 31,185 before 2014 to 64,559 as of now.
