MBBS Students Required to Complete Course within 9 Years of Admission, States NMC

“NMC has informed that the student will not be permitted to exceed four attempts in the first year (MBBS) under any circumstances, and no student will be allowed to pursue the undergraduate medical course beyond nine years from the date of admission.”
In a recent development, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has introduced new regulations specifying that students pursuing MBBS must complete their course within a maximum of nine years from the date of admission. The circular also states that students will have a maximum of four attempts to clear the first year.
The NMC has further emphasized the implementation of common counseling for admissions to graduate courses in all medical institutions across the country. This counseling will be based on the merit list of the NEET-UG examination.
As per the gazette notification released by the NMC on June 2, it is explicitly mentioned that no student will be granted more than four attempts to clear the first year of MBBS. Additionally, no student will be permitted to continue the undergraduate medical course after the completion of nine years from the date of admission.
It should be noted that a student admitted into a Graduate Medical Education Program will only be considered to have completed their graduation after successfully completing their compulsory rotating medical internship, as per the Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship Regulations, 2021.
The gazette further states that common counseling for admission to graduate courses in medicine will be conducted for all medical institutions in India, based on the NEET-UG merit list. The counseling process will adhere to the seat matrix provided by the NMC, and it may involve multiple rounds as necessary.
The responsibility of counseling will be assigned to a designated authority appointed by the government, which will also determine and notify its agency and methodology for all undergraduate seats.
The Undergraduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB) will be responsible for publishing guidelines for the conduct of common counseling. The designated authority, as mentioned in section 17, will conduct the counseling in accordance with these published guidelines.
Furthermore, the regulations explicitly state that no medical institute should admit any candidate to the Graduate Medical Education (GME) course in violation of these regulations.
