After hearing two PILs filed one by Stephen’s college challenging DU order to grant admission under CUET and another by a Law student challenging the college’s decision of continuing interviews for admission, the Delhi HC ordered St Stephen’s College.

follow DU Admission Policy

The Bench of Justice Satish Chander Sharma and Justice Subramonuim Prasad of the Delhi High Court on Monday ordered the St. Stephen’s college withdrew the admission prospectus issued by it and followed the admission policy that Delhi University has laid down for the academic year 2022-23. The bench also directed the college to issue a fresh admission prospectus in which 100% impetus is to be given to the CUET score for non-minority students seeking admission to Undergraduate Courses in 2022-23.

The bench was hearing two PILs filed by St Stephen’s college and by a law student Monika Poddar. The Stephen college had filed a PIL challenging the new admission policy of DU while Monika’s PIL was challenging the policy of St Stephen’s College of giving 85% importance to CUET score and 15% to interviews which doesn’t match the new admission policy of DU.

The DU stated that CUET has to be uniformly accepted by Stephen’s college under NEP and Minority educational institutions can not admit students as per their own methods. On the other hand Stephen’s college said that it was following the practice of conducting interviews for many years and it was allowed.

The PIL filed by the student under advocate Akash Vajpai stated that conducting interviews whose results will be fully based on the satisfaction of the interviewer can lead to discrimination and manipulation.

According to the PIL, DU policy says that General Category admissions in minority colleges like St Stephen’s will be done only on the basis of CUET marks whereas those for reserved, college can give 15% weightage to interviews.
