IIT Lifestyle: Picking IIT Bombay was a best decision, Says a student

I chose to major in civil engineering because I want to work for my family’s construction and development company in the future. I put a lot of effort into my studies, earning an All India Rank of 3154 in JEE Advanced and a 99.1 percentile in JEE Main. I could have chosen Civil Engineering at any of the other IITs, but after consulting with the seniors, I settled on IIT Bombay.
One of the best things that has ever happened to me, in fact. Beyond my expectations are the people, the culture, and the exposure I have experienced since enrolled in IIT Bombay.
IIT Bombay is constantly humming with activity. This campus is just like the city—it never sleeps. There is constantly activity. I play basketball for my university and have been to other IIT campuses in Delhi and Kanpur. Although both campuses are fantastic, ours is more vibrant. There is no set time for entering or leaving this area.

You can still see students outside in the early morning hours, either playing or just strolling. Never a dull moment, it seems. It exists in its own world. There are approximately 10,000 students enrolled in various courses, plus professors and other faculty members.
I was a little hesitant to live in a big city because I’m from a small town in Ranchi, India. I did, however, also want to attend one of the best schools in the nation. I completed my first three semesters entirely online. In November 2021, after the Covid-19 wave had passed, I started college. When I first came here, I quickly made a lot of friends with people from all different ages, social classes, and fields of interest.
I was a quiet teen before enrolling at IIT Bombay. But I have become much more social over the past three years. I have friendship groups from my class, my hostel, and the basketball team. Our BTech batch in civil engineering has 160 students.
What my day looks like at IIT Bombay
My experience at IIT Bombay is very similar to how it is portrayed in movies. At 8:00 am, it starts. Many people in the hostel stay up late and rush to the 8:30 am lectures. Nevertheless, no one skips class because of our strict attendance policy (80% attendance is required in almost all subjects/courses). Typically, classes last until seven o’clock in the evening.

When it comes to inviting people to join their research and projects, they are welcoming. If you want to do research and study core subjects, IITs are a good choice. As teaching assistants, we also have MTech and PhD students. If I want to apply for a master’s degree here, I can do so in my third year and join the five-year integrated program.
IIT Bombay given me some gems
There is a ton more to do besides academics. I joined the civil engineering clubs and the sports council during my first two years. Now that I spend the majority of my time studying or playing basketball, I am no longer a member of these clubs. The college team’s practices are currently in full swing. Every day, we devote three to four hours. At 10 o’clock at night, I finally have some alone time. After practice is over, I either study or hang out with my friends. All of the students would gather in one room to study in groups before exams.
Holi, Diwali, and Christmas are all celebrated together as part of the fantastic hostel culture. The parties are held in such a lavish manner. You start to miss home less as a result of all these things. I believe the connections and friendships I have made here will last a lifetime.
