Over 2.6 lakh regular students were given mass promotions from the 8.5 lakh regular students who appeared for the Class 10 GSHSEB exams in 2021.

In 2021, amid the Covid-19 pandemic, Gujarat’s Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) announced mass promotions in Class 10 and 12 that led to a five-year high in Class 12 registration at 5.91 lakh.

More than 8.57 lakh regular students — 4,90,482 boys and 3,66,722 girls — were promoted in Class 10 state board exams in 2021, the highest number registered so far, leading to nearly one lakh additional registrations for Class 12 board exams starting on March 14. Science students are represented by 1.10 lakh registrants.

According to GSHSEB records, the number of regular registrations is the highest in five years. Officials said it may be the highest number of regular students to register for 12th grade.

“GSHSEB has made additional infrastructure and hired extra manpower to accommodate these additional students,” GSHSEB chairman AJ Shah told..

It also recorded the highest number of students passing Class 12 with 5.07 lakh regular students, 5.91 lakh registrations for GSHSEB Class 12 exams, the highest in 5 years, including 1.07 lakh in science.

Due to the increased number of students appearing for exams this year, additional logistical support, examination buildings, supervisors, and examination staff have been put in place.

In March 2022, Class 12 Science examinations were conducted in 506 buildings, but this year they will be conducted in 581 buildings, according to sources.

There are 1,833 buildings arranged for general stream, up from 1,400 last year, while around 90,000 staff will be deployed, up from 80,000.

Over 2.6 lakh students or 31 per cent of the 8.5 lakh regular students who appeared for the GSHSEB exams in 2021 were given mass promotions.

Nearly 9,400 students received grace marks of more than 100. Over 170 students, including 65 girls, received the highest marks out of nearly 200 in June 2021 for promotion to Class 11. A minimum passing mark is 231 — 33 marks in each of the seven subjects.

From 66.97 percent in 2019 to 60.64 percent in 2020, the overall pass percentage of 7,92,942 candidates increased to 65.18 percent in 2022.
