The National Policy on Education 1986 envisaged establishment of a Navodaya Vidyalaya in each District of the country. The first two schools were started in 1985-86 on experimental basis. The number of schools have now grown to 450 spread over 33 Union States and Union Territories. These schools have over 1.25 lakhs students on rolls. Navodaya Vidyalayas are fully residential and co-educational schools covering classes VI to XII. Education in the Vidyalayas is free for all enrolled students including lodging, boarding, text books, uniforms etc.
Aims and Objectives
The Vidyalayas seek to promote and develop talented, bright and gifted children predominantly from rural areas who may otherwise be denied good educational opportunities.
The Vidyalayas are affiliated to Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and impart the CBSE curricula.Admission to Vidyalayas is made at the class VI level through open test conducted at District level by CBSE. About 30,000 students are admitted every year.
The Navodaya Vidyalayas envisage a new style of growth and development aimed at identification and development of talented, bright and gifted children predominantly from rural areas who are denied good educational opportunities. These institutions are envisaged as model and pace-setting institutions to lead the secondary education system in India as need based productive and paving the way for the realization of national goals.
These Vidyalayas have been conceived as an idea, a progressive forward looking concept, making modern India the focal area of development through educational excellence. Objectives of quality education with a strong component of culture, inculcation of values, promotion of National Integration, adventure activities, physical education, reasonable level of competence as envisaged in Three Language Formula and serving the respective districts as focal points for improving quality of education through sharing of experiences and facilities have been some of the main alms of these institutions.
