Karnataka University in Dharwad (KUD) was established by Bombay legislature of the erstwhile Bombay Presidency through the Karnatak University Act 1949. It became a statutory University in 1950. Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) is the eighth Open University in India and is one of the largest distance education university in the state of Karnataka. The University is a member of The Association of Indian Universities (AIU). It is recognized by the Distance Education Council (DEC), New Delhi.

KSOU offers distance education through wide-ranging programs. The post graduate center established at Belgaum offers Master of Education (M Ed), a course of one academic year with two semesters for full time students.  M Sc course is being offered, with admission as per the norms of Karnataka University,  at post graduate centre at Karwar offers. The Bijapur  post graduate center offers MA in History and Archaeology and PG Diploma courses in Tourism, Art-History, Computer Application, Food Processing and Quality Control.

The Study Centres established by the University provides face to face interaction between the students and KSOU. KSOU provides facilities like lecture halls, guest  and canteen. The University provided girls hostel  for the female students and cottage facility  to outstation boys. KSOU also gives internet in the library.

The Institute offers Under Graduate Programs in Commerce, Arts, Education and Library Management. They provide Post Graduate degree in Arts, Commerce, Education, Law, Management, science etc.
KSOU Distance Education Admissions
- For admission in KSOU, candidates can opt for Free Counselling for guidance and selection of course according to their requirements.Â
- After choosing the desired course, candidates can fill the application form online or can also send the completed application form by email or by post.
- As the application form is filled, Process of fee payment starts, where, the candidates have an option to either pay the fees in lump sum to avail exciting offers or in convenient installments. It is easy to pay fees with the help of convenient payment options by debit/credit card, bank transfer, cheque etc.
- The University then sends them for verification. After verification, the admission of the candidate is confirmed.
- After the admission confirmation, Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) generates student ID along with the Study Material and it is dispatched within 7-10 working days.
