Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, Nagpur (VNIT), named after the great engineer, statesman & visionary of modern India and Bharat Ratna Awardee M. Visvesvaraya, was established in June 1960 by the Government of India in collaboration with the Government of Maharashtra, with an aim of imparting excellent technical education at undergraduate level in the state.
One of first six Regional Engineering Colleges set up by the central government in association with various state governments across the country; the institute has traversed a long path.
Today the college besides offering engineering courses at undergraduate level offer technical education at post graduate level also. One can also take up research in various disciplines at the institute. Moreover, the institute has been conferred with a status of deemed university by Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD) in 2002. The institute has autonomous Board of Governors who is representatives of the Central Government, State Government, Educational bodies like AICTE and UGC. Teaching Faculty, Industrialists, and Technologists also manage the institute.
As a prestigious national institute, VNIT has long recognised its role in engineering education, generation and dissemination of useful & relevant technological, industrial & economical development of the country, the institute has contributed in the application of science & technology in the service of the society through different programs of International aid & assistance, the institute has all along endeavored to discharge its obligations successfully with the efforts of its faculty expertise & well developed world class facilities.
As a prestigious national institute, VNIT has played a great role in engineering education, generation and dissemination of useful & relevant technological, industrial & economical development of the country. The Institute has produced some great engineers who have contributed towards technological advancement of the society. There are seven boys hostels and two girls hostels. The Institute has an independent computer centre for catering the services to entire Institute.
