Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) - Introduction

With an objective of maintaining and standardizing the standard of training professionals, the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) was established as a registered society in 1986 under the Ministry of Social Welfare – Government of India.After a passage of time, to empower the council the government came out with Rehabilitation Council of India Act – 1992.The act provided statutory body status to the institute.However, the act was amended in the year 2000.Thereafter, any person, serving or willing to serve the disabled must have qualifications, recognized by Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI).

The organizational structure of RCI is very strong in the form of General Council, Executive Committee, Chairman, Member Secretary, Expert Committees and Zonal Committee.The chairman is the supreme authority of the RCI.

RCI works in close cooperation with various institutions like Madhya Pradesh Bhoj (Open) University, Bhopal, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) New Delhi, and National Information Center under the Ministry of Information & Technology.

The council also has a National Program Policy in the form of Primary Health Center (PHC) and Bridge Courses.PHC’s work towards providing equal opportunities to disable people by protecting their rights and ensuring that all disabled people participate in the local activities like ordinary people.

Bridge Course, on the other hand, ensures that all people working for welfare of disable will undergo training programmes offered by the council.
