Geologists' Examination 2022

Highlights
Geology and its allied disciplines are concerned with the structure, dynamics and evolution of the earth and its natural mineral and energy resources. Hydrogeologists focus on the relation of waters on or below the surface of the earth. The Union Public Service Commission’s (UPSC’s) Geologists’ Examination recruits eligible candidates to premier geoscientific organisations like the Geological Survey of India (GSI) or the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB).
The UPSC, New Delhi conducts the Geologists’ Examination in accordance with the rules published by the Ministry of Mines in the Gazette of India.
Categories for appointment
There are two major categories under which geologists are appointed to work for the Government of India:
- Category I:Â Geological Survey of India, Ministry of Mines
- Category II:Â Central Ground Water Board, Ministry of Water Resources
UPSC will be conducting the Geologists’ Examination, 2022 from 20 Febuary, 2022 for recruitment of geologists to the following vacancies and for the following posts:
Posts in the Geological Survey of India, Ministry of Mines:
(i) Geologist (Group A): 100 vacancies
(ii) Geophysicists (Group A): 80 vacancies
(iii) Chemist (Group A): 80 vacancies

Posts in the Central Ground Water Board, Ministry of Water Resources:
(i) Junior Hydrogeologists (Scientist B) (Group A): 5 vacancies
Geologists’ Exam - Eligibility Criteria
The eligibility criteria fixed by the UPSC for Geologists’ examination are mentioned below.
Age
The age limit prescribed for the Geologist examination varies according to the post.
Geological Survey of India, Ministry of Mines:
For the post of Geologist, Geophysicists and Chemist, the candidate must be between the age of 21 – 32 years as of 1 August in the year of the exam.
Central Ground Water Board, Ministry of Water Resources:
For the post of Junior Hydrogeologists (Scientist B) (Group A), the candidate must be between the age of 21 – 35 years as of 1 August in the year of the exam.
Age relaxation of 3-10 years is provided to candidates from SC, ST, OBC, defence, J&K, ex-service background, physical disabilities etc.
Educational Qualification
- Category I: Geological Survey of India, Ministry of Mines
Candidates interested in applying for the post of a Geologist must have a master’s degree in any of the following subjects:
- Geological Science
- Geology
- Applied Geology
- Geo-Exploration
- Mineral Exploration
- Engineering Geology
- Marine Geology
- Earth Science and Resource Management
- Oceanography and Coastal Areas Studies
- Petroleum Geosciences
- Petroleum Exploration
- Geochemistry
- Geological Technology
- Geophysical Technology
Candidates interested in applying for the post of a Geophysicist must have a master’s degree in any of the following subjects:
- M.Sc. in Physics
- M.Sc. in r Applied Physics
- M.Sc. (Geophysics)
- Integrated M.Sc.(Exploration Geophysics)
- M.Sc (Applied Geophysics)
- M.Sc. (Marine Geophysics)
- M.Sc. (Tech.) (Applied Geophysics)
Candidates interested in applying for the post of a Chemist must have a master’s degree in any of the following subjects:
- M.Sc. in Chemistry
- M.Sc. in Applied Chemistry
- M.Sc. in Analytical Chemistry
- Category II: Central Ground Water Board, Ministry of Water Resources
Candidates interested in applying for the post of a Junior Hydrogeologist must have a master’s degree in any of the following subjects:
- Geology
- Applied geology
- Marine Geology
- Hydrogeology
Candidates appearing in their final examination can also apply for the examination but are required to submit proof of passing along with detailed application form prescribed by the UPSC before joining the Government of India Service as geologists.
Nationality
A candidate must be either:
(a)Â a Citizen of India, or
(b)Â a subject of Nepal, or
(c)Â a subject of Bhutan, or
(d)Â a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before the 1st January, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India. or
(e)Â a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka or East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia or from Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.
Provided that a candidate belonging to categores (b), (c), (d) and (e) above shall be a person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India.
A candidate in whose case a certificate of eligibility is necessary, may be admitted to the examination but the offer of appointment may be given only after the necessary eligibility certificate has been issued to him by the Government of India.
Physical Fitness
Candidates must be physically fit according to physical standards for admission to Geologists’ Examination as per the regulations specified in the examination notification.
Geologists' Exam: Test Centers
Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) administers the Geologist’s Examination in the following cities:
Ahmedabad, Allahabad, Bangalore, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Cuttack, Delhi, Dispur, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Patna, Shillong, Shimla and Thiruvananthapuram.
