The Indian Coast Guard is a national organization responsible for various services at sea, especially protecting India’s maritime interests and enforcing maritime law. The Indian Coast Guard was created on 18 August 1978, as an independent Armed Force of India, as per the Coast Guard Act, operating under the Ministry of Defence.

The most important duties of the Coast Guard are:

  • Safeguarding and protecting artificial islands, offshore terminals, installations, and other devices in the maritime zone
  • Protecting and assisting fishermen in distress
  • Preserving and protecting marine environment, including controlling marine pollution
  • Assisting customs and other authorities in anti-smuggling operations
  • Enforcing the Maritime Zones of India Act
  • Taking measures to protect the safety of life and property at sea and collecting scientific data

Indian Coast Guard Enrolled Personnel

Enrolled personnel who join the Indian Coast Guard join the forces either as a Yantrik (a technician) or a Navik (a sailor). The latter may serve either in the General Duty or Domestic branches of the Indian Coast Guard. In the former, naviks work as sailors, weapons systems operators, communication specialists and divers. In the Domestic branch, naviks are hired as stewards, cooks, etc.

Naviks (General Duty)

  • Age Limit – Age as on 1st July of the year of recruitment: 18-22 years (5 years relaxation for SC/ST and 3 years for OBC)
  • Educational Qualification – 10+2 from a recognized board with 50% marks and 50% in Maths and Physics
  • Physical Standard – Height 157 cms; Weight Proportionate to Height; 1.6 km run in 7 minutes; 20 squats; 10 pushups 

Naviks (Domestic)

  • Age Limit – Age as on 1st July of the year of recruitment: 18-22 years (5 years relaxation for SC/ST and 3 years for OBC)
  • Educational Qualification – 10+2 from a recognized board with 50% marks
  • Physical Standard – Height 157 cms; Weight Proportionate to Height; normal hearing ability; no physical disability; no cardiovascular diseases; 1.6 km run in 7 minutes; 20 squats; 10 pushups

Twice a year, ‘The Employment News’ as well as other local newspapers across the country advertise for candidates. Coast guard recruitment is held in 5 zones divided into West, East, North-East, North-West, A&N, and Northern regions. Applications are accepted online on the official website for the Indian Coast Guard.

Entrance Examination

Shortlisting of candidates is based on the marks the candidates have received and the higher percentage of marks for a specific center. The written examination is an objective one covering subjects like Math, Physics, Chemistry, English, General Knowledge, Current Affairs, Quantitative Aptitude, and Reasoning.

Once the candidates qualify the written examination, they have to undergo a Physical Fitness Test and a Medical Examination.

Pay and Perks

As a Navik joining the Indian Coast Guard, you will be placed in the Basic pay category, drawing INR 21,700. Other than this you will be eligible for Dearness Allowance and other allowances based on the nature of the duty involved and the place where the Navik is posted. This is as per the regulation enforced.

A Navik can be promoted up to the position of Pradhan Adhikari with a pay scale of INR 47,600. If a Navik is exceptional and suitable, he may also be promoted to the Officer cadre.

Training

Basic training for the position, once selected, happens at INS Chilka followed by sea training, and professional trade training.
