The state of the environment has only become worse within the last few decades. Pollution of all kinds, deforestation that destroys the natural habitats of animals and thus endangers them are only a few instances of how the ecological balance is being disrupted. So what is environmental engineering? It mainly deals with environment based subjects like pollution control, industrial hygiene, hazardous waste management, radiation protection, toxic materials control, waste disposal and water supply related problems. The eligibility criteria for doing a Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) in Environmental Engineering is generally that you should pass the higher secondary exam from a board that is recognized in India with physics, chemistry and mathematics with at least fifty percent in aggregate. Competitive engineering exams such as the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) or Birla Institute of Technology and Science Admission Test (BITSAT) have to be cleared as well by those who seek admission. Graduates in this course can find work in the Central and State Pollution Control Boards, in distilleries, water treatment industries, food processing industries, in state forest departments, Department of Agriculture and Cooperation, state water authorities and urban departments. They might also find work in research institutes as technical assistants, project assistants or research associates.

Topics covered in Environmental Engineering

  • The first year of this course usually covers subjects like mathematics, programming in C++, basic horticulture, engineering mechanics, electrical engineering, thermodynamics, engineering physics, production technology, general microbiology and manufacturing practices.
  • In the second year, subjects that could be taught include strength of materials, theory of machines, refrigeration and air conditioning, fluid mechanics and hydraulics, biochemical engineering, fossil fuel engineering, forest resource management, electronics and instrumentation, machine design and computer aided drawing, heat power engineering, and biochemical conversion technology.
  • The third year might encompass subjects like solar energy engineering, water pollution and control, hydrology and water resources, public health engineering, power plant engineering, energy auditing and management, waste water engineering, air pollution control engineering, wind energy conversion technology and energy storage.
  • The final year could consist of subjects like emerging alternate energy conversion systems, industrial waste treatment and management, rural energy, development education and energy efficiency and performance assessment.
