North-Eastern Hill University was set up by an Act of Parliament and notified on 19th July 1973. The main aim of the University is to spread knowledge by providing instructional and research facilities in such branches of learning as it may deem fit; to pay special attention to the improvement of the social and economic conditions and welfare of the people of the hill areas of the North-eastern region, and in particular, the intellectual, academic and cultural advancement. The University has ‘A’ Grade as per NAAC Re-accreditation (2009).

The distance mode is more learner-oriented. Most of the instructions are imparted through distance education methodology rather than face-to-face communication. Students are provided with printed material for both theory and practical components of the programs is supplied to the learners, which is included in the fees. The Center of Distance Education offers courses such as Certificate Course on Floriculture, General Course in Floriculture, and Post Graduate Diploma in Entrepreneurship.

The university provides professional Masters and Ph.D degree in Economics, Management, Humanities, Human and Environmental Sciences, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Social Sciences, Technology and Education.
Admissions:
FOR GENERAL COURSES:Â Students are requested to apply online for the courses/programmes in the University on payment of `. 220/- and by `. 100/- (for SC/ST category) visiting this University Website www.nehu.ac.in. and the payment will also be online.
FOR PROFESSIONAL COURSES: Application form and Prospectus can be downloaded from the University Website www.nehu.ac.in. The application Fee for admission is `.600/- and `. 300/- (for SC/ST category) and payment should be made by going to this website www.onlinesbi.com and then click on State Bank Collect. Application form fee is not reimbursable. The filled-in application form along with a copy of the payment receipt for the same amount can be sent to the respective Head of Department, NEHU, Permanent Campus, Shillong – 793022 or NEHU Tura Campus, Chandmari, Tura – 794002.
