Now, manufacturing and production industries need to constantly look for ways of reducing costs to keep pace with growing competition. Engineering productivity is often overlooked. Industrial and production engineering is a branch which is derived from mechanical engineering and it enables engineers to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of both manufacturing and service sector industries. To be eligible for the undergraduate course, students must have passed their higher secondary school certificate examinations with science subjects like physics, chemistry and mathematics.
For Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), it is important to clear the Joint Entrance Examination, and if you are applying to particular colleges, it is important to clear the individual college entrance tests. This engineering degree is usually a four-year course. After your graduation, you can find work in various fields like armed forces, railways and other public sectors. Jobs can be found in universities and colleges as well. Graduates in industrial and production engineering might find jobs such as the following: process engineer, industrial manager, management engineer, quality control technician, operations analyst, plant engineer or ergonomist.
After general subjects in the first year, the third semester could cover subjects such as engineering mathematics, material science and metallurgy, basic thermodynamics, mechanics of materials, manufacturing process, computer-aided machine drawing and fluid mechanics. In the fourth semester, subjects like engineering mathematics, mechanical instruments and metrology, applied thermodynamics, kinetics of machines, manufacturing process and fluid mechanics are usually taught. Management and entrepreneurship, control engineering, ergonomics, CAD/CAM and design of machine elements might be taught in the fifth semester. The sixth semester could consist of subjects like theory of metal forming, engineering economy, tool engineering and design, and quality assurance and reliability. An elective like mechanical vibrations, finite element method, human resource management, software engineering and management or advance foundry might be available.
The seventh semester could cover subjects like mechatronics, supply chain management, operations management and operations research. Electives could include composite materials, technology management, combinatorial optimization, project management, concurrent engineering, marketing management, facilities planning and design and management information systems. The final semester might cover subject such as fluid power systems and world class manufacturing. Electives might be total quality management, advanced joining processes and non-destructive testing, knowledge management, design of experiments, advanced operations research, database management systems, engineering system design, artificial intelligence and expert systems, automation in manufacture, and product design and manufacturing.
Some colleges that offer a Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) or a Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) in Industrial & Production Engineering are given below.
Programs are subject to change, it is advisable to check directly with a school for current program availability.
