The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Visakhapatnam is the 19th in the prestigious list of Indian Institutes of Management which offer management courses. Due to delay in the approvals, the college inauguration could not be on time. IIM Bangalore will be the mentor institute for IIM Vizag and its faculty would be teaching at IIM-V in order to ensure that students get the best learning experience at the new IIM.
The foundation stone for the permanent campus of IIM Visakhapatnam was laid by Union Minister for Human Resource Development, Smriti Irani on 17 January, 2015 at Gambeeram village, about 25 km from Visakhapatnam.
Since it would take a few years for the campus to be ready, classes will be conducted from Andhra University campus from the 2015-16 academic year. Andhra University (AU) administration would not be providing hostel facilities to students of the new IIM and students must arrange for that on their own. The business school has a floor space of about 20,000 sft, which was finalized by a team from IIM-Bangalore.
However, the permanent premise would come up on a sprawling 466-acre site at Gambheeram. A hill occupies more than 230 acres and the rest of the area (around 80 acres) is fit for construction of buildings.

While initially approved seats were 90, the institute shall only permit entry of 70 seats which may further go down. The lowering of number of seats would result in losses of 15-20 students being deprived of admission and a crore on account of loss of tuition fee etc, the cost of which may be borne by the IIM Bangalore. For the first year, the number of seats may be restricted to just 45. The basic ground work has been done and the final nod from MHRD is awaited. The decision has been made to start academic session from August
IIM-V would be offering the 2 year PGP programme (post graduate programme in management.)
