IIFT 2016 Exam Analysis & Expected Cut-off

This year’s IIFT exam conducted on 27 November, 2016 for admissions to IIFT New Delhi & IIFT Kolkata’s MBA (IB) program, was a tad difficult than the previous year’s with a slight change in the weightage given to various sections: the DI/LR section got more questions in IIFT 2016, while the number of questions in the GK & Mathematics (QA) were reduced. There was no change in the number of questions in the English (RC+VA) section.

Further analysis of the IIFT 2016 question paper:

Number of questions

There were 123 questions in total in IIFT 2016 as compared to 124 questions last year.

The pattern of differential marking also remained the same as last year for all the sections:

Reading comprehension (RC):  1 mark per question
Verbal Ability (VA):                   0.75 mark per question
General Awareness (GA):        0.5 mark per question
Quantitative Ability (QA):          1 mark per question
Data Interpretation (DI):           1 mark per question
Logical Reasoning (LR):           0.75 mark per question

Difficulty level of IIFT 2016

Even though the passages in the Reading Comprehension section were not as long and calculations in Data Interpretation section were not as intensive as last year’s, all the sections of IIFT 2016 proved to be slightly more difficult than IIFT 2015.

In English Usage, the VA questions in particular proved to be a tough nut to crack. For instance the antonyms to be matched in two columns included words like baleful (antonym: amiable), vexation (antonym: happiness) etc. You were expected  to know meanings of words such as equipoise, emollient, encomium, militate etc.

The GK questions were equally difficult, if not slightly more challenging than the last year. For instance, you were expected to know about the Myanmar 2015 General Elections, about Alvin Toffler’s book, the UEFA Euro 2016 Soccer Tournament, the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) etc.
