A student who is part of the protest said that they are peacefully protesting and they have not gone on a strike. They are demanding the fees be revised without impacting on their academics.
IIT Delhi M.Tech students are protesting a hike in fees for their programs this academic session. According to institute officials, the current fee was decided by the institute’s board and was implemented in January 2022.
The committee formed to review the tuition fee has given its recommendations, which are awaiting the board’s approval, said an official. In the meantime, the students have expressed their dissatisfaction with the current situation and are hoping for a more favorable outcome.

The tuition fee for M.Tech programs was Rs 10,000 per semester till last year. But as of this academic year, that has changed. The new fee structure, applicable to students admitted in 2022-2023, is Rs 25,000 per semester. Along with that, the hostel fee has increased from Rs 10,500 per semester to Rs 13,250 per semester. M.Tech students admitted in this academic year only joined the institute last month.
A first-year M.Tech student spoke out about the extreme fee hike from Rs 26,000 to Rs 53,000 per semester, saying, “The increment is too sharp. We had to accept the fees when we joined, but we are trying to challenge them. We have had meetings with the authorities, but there isn’t yet any written assurance that it will be revised.” This fee increase comes at a time when the monthly stipend for teaching assistant duties and lab work remains the same at Rs 12,400 per month. The students are feeling burdened and are working to change this unfair pricing.
