UK-India Young Professionals Scheme

Rishi Sunak, the newly elected United Kingdom Prime Minister, announced the UK-India Young Professionals Scheme today. Under the scheme, 3,000 degree-holding Indian nationals aged 18 to 30 will be given the opportunity to live and work in the UK for up to two years.

According to the UK Prime Minister’s Office statement, “I know from personal experience how much value there is in the deep cultural and historical ties we have with India. I am pleased that even more of India’s brightest young people will now have the opportunity to experience all that life in the UK has to offer – and vice-versa – making our economies and societies richer.”

Hours after Sunak met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the 17th edition of the G20 Summit, an announcement was made in the Downing Street readout. This was their first meeting after Boris Johnson, the first Indian-origin British PM, assumed office last month.

Under the new UK-India Young Professionals Scheme, the UK will offer 3,000 visas annually to young professionals between 18-30 years of age. The scheme will be reciprocal, allowing degree-educated Indian nationals to come to the UK to live and work for up to two years.

The launch of the scheme is a significant moment for both our bilateral relationship with India and the UK’s wider commitment to forging stronger links with the Indo-Pacific region to strengthen both our economies, as per the Downing Street statement.
