SVNIT SuratSardar Vallabbhai National Institute of Technology, Surat was set up in the year 1961 as one of the 17 Regional Engineering Technology colleges (RECs) of the country. A joint venture between the Central Government and the government of Gujarat, the main purpose with which the institute was established was to impart good technical education in the state.
The institute, which presently holds the status of a Deemed University, started with just three undergraduate degree courses in engineering- Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering.
Today the institute not only has added more disciplines in its undergraduate degree courses but also offers engineering education at post graduate level. The institute fills up 50 percent seats in any course with the students from Gujarat and rest from the students of other states. The institute has a huge campus with facilities of banking, dispensary, Post office and a guest house.
There are 11 hostels including one hostel for girls. The institute has one bank and two ATM rooms situated in the campus, State Bank of India and ATM of Canara Bank.
