Applications have been invited by the Charles Wallace India Trust (CWIT) for scholarships for Indian students who are already pursuing a career in fields like Academic, professional and Artistic courses and enables them to spend time in the UK.

The Charles Wallace India Trust Scholarships:

CWIT is named after Charles Wallace (1855-1916) who lived in Calcutta and gave rise to the Shaw Wallace Company. In the year 1981, following an agreement between India and Great Britain, CWIT was established as an English Charity. Among its four trustees one is nominated by the British Council. In over thirty years, CWIT has offered over 2700 grants to qualified Indian students who are studying in Great Britain. British Council gives valuable administrative guidance and support to CWIT.

Artist residencies: CWIRT supports two artist residencies

Gasworks International Residency programmes- CWIT and INLAKS Foundation co-fund this program.
Spike Island Residency Program: This is a three month program residency at Spike Island Bristol and CWIT has been supporting quite a few notable artists from Spike Island.

Heritage conservation: This program helps applicants to be placed in museology, archaeology and curating or conservation at the Victoria and Albert Museum or agreed institutions. Apart from CWIT this has been funded by Nehru Memorial Trusts for Indian Collections.

British Museum International Training Programme: CWIT supports one Indian student in this program which offers placement inn museology, archaeology, curating or conservation at the Victoria and Albert Museum or other agreed institutions. Scottish Universities International Summer Schools (SUISS): CWIT provides two scholarships for fees, accommodation, and living costs in Edinburgh for participants of the following 2 courses in this summer schools:

Creative writing
Text and context: British and Irish literature from 1900 to the present

Applications must be sent to SUISS and their own international fares must be provided by them along with their personal expenditure.

Every year 10 long term awards are given to mid-career practitioners but it may vary with the demand. The awards are usually timed between 2-3 months to a year and covers accommodation and living costs in UK, fees and part of international fares.
Visiting Fellowships: 10 fellowships are awarded to students from academic, writing and translating sector to spend 2-3 months in host universities.
- British Center for Literary Translation (BCLT) is offering The Charles Wallace India Trust Translation Residency for the session 2016-17. BCLT has been giving this scholarship to Indian translators since 1900s which is a chance to spend time at the University of East Anglia, giving them the opportunity to work on a literary translation project of their own. The CWIT fellow gets the chance to experience the academic, cultural and social life of the faculty. The chosen fellow will also get to present a paper of their work and share the progress with translators and creative writers.
  BCLT is located within the School of Literature, Drama and Creative Writing which offers Graduate and Post Graduate level degrees in Literary Translation.
  The last date to apply for this scholarship is 28 November 2016.
  Duration of the fellowship: Monday, 24 April, 2017 to Sunday 9 July, 2017.

CWIT supports Indian participation in Royal Court Theatre’s International playwriting residences scheme.
Short Research and Professional Visits: there are 10-15 grants annually summing up to 1400 pounds for short research and professional visits in fields such as arts heritage, archaeology, history, literature, performing and creative arts, history of art, conservation and humanities. The grants are good enough for the students to thrive for three weeks in UK. If a candidate has to extend the stay then he/she will have to gather some other grants. The grants are payable only after the reaching UK. This does not cover international fares. The fields that are not covered under this grant are management, science, economics, law, development studies, anthropology, international relations, publishing. Those Applications can also be filled in by applicants who are doing archival research, consulting colleagues, or preparing for publication. Preference will be given to post-doctoral applicants though applicants in the later stage of their doctorates will also be considered.
The CWIT also offers grants to Indian students who are completing their final year of doctoral studies in UK universities

Important dates

Application forms for Charles Wallace Long Term awards 2015-16 will be accepted till 30 November 2016 at your nearest British Council centre.

Apply for short research and professional visits before 31 December 2014. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted by end of March/beginning of April 2015.

Apply for grants for your final year of doctoral study in UK before 31 December, 2014.

Eligibility criteria

The applicant should be a citizen of India
He/she must be aged between 25 and 38 years of age
He/she musty have a first degree, diploma or professional qualification in their specialization.
Applicants with significant working experience is preferred by CWIT
The applicant should not be a recipient of a CWIT grant for the last 5 years.
The names and e-mail addresses of two referees who know the applicants work
Applicants must also provide details of any other grant that he/she is availing.

Application procedure

Applications must contain a statement of purpose, not more than two pages, stating clearly which course one plans to follow, the reason for visiting the country and about plans to implement the knowledge gathered in UK.
An IELTS certificate is necessary and it is mandatory for most courses in UK
Evidence of unconditional acceptance of course, programs, attachment or internship for which you have applied or evidence of progress towards acceptance
The portfolio has to be submitted where necessary in CD, DVD or hard copy.
Those applicants who are short listed will be called for another session of interview in Delhi by the British Council.
