The Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (MGIMS) is run by the Kasturba Health Society. The Society was established in 1964 under the Societies Registration Act. Before the Society was formed, the Kasturba Hospital (started in 1945) was run by the Gandhi National Memorial Trust (also called Gandhi Smarak Nidhi). The MGIMS was earlier affiliated to the Nagpur University since its inception in 1969 till 1997. From 1998 the MGIMS has been affiliated to the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nasik. The MGIMS admits 65 medical students on the basis of a pre-medical entrance test (in 2006, close to 10,000 medical aspirants took the test). The institute also offers post-graduation in all major clinical and basic sciences disciplines. A competitive entrance examination is conducted by the university at Delhi, Nagpur, Hyderabad and Mumbai centers generally on third Sunday of April every year.
