The foundation stone for the Kendriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha was laid by the former Vice-President of India on 4th January, 1962 for the preservation and propagation of Traditional Sanskrit learning combining it with the modern methods of research.

The Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha is extended over forty two acres of land at the foot of the Seven Hills in Tirumala. It came under the aegis of Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan- an autonomous body under the Ministry of Education in April, 1971. In spite of all challenges of the modernization, the Vidyapeetha has developed gradually into a premier institution for Sanskrit learning and research in India. It is also being conferred by the status of deemed University on 26th August, 1989 and started functioning as a Deemed University from the academic year 1991 - 92.

The Vidyapeetha is now headed by Dr.V.R.Panchamukhi serving as  the Chancellor (his second term in office) and  Prof. Harekrishna Sathapathy as  the Vice-Chancellor of the Vidyapeetha.

Directorate of Distance Education (DDE)

Kendriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha started its Distance Education programme from the year 2003-04 after being granted approval by the Distance Education Council of the IGNOU.

IGNOU also allotted grant of Rs. 10 lakhs to meet with the needs of the administration. For the smooth functioning of the programme, the Vidyapeetha has appointed members to carry on various duties.
