Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute - Introduction

Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute, an autonomous academic institution under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, was set up in 1995 by the Government of India at Kolkata. Registered under the West Bengal Societies Registration Act, 1961, the Institute is named after the legendary film maestro Satyajit Ray. With an aim to churn out creative and innovative film and television professionals in the country, the institute imparts training in film and television through its full time post-graduate course in Cinema. Besides, the institute also fund and produces fiction and non-fiction films.

The institute has a film and TV studio, a film library besides multi-purpose Main Theatre (370 seats), a preview theatre (72 seats) as well as an Open Air Theatre with capacity of over 500 with 35mm, 16mm, class room theatre for students to watch films. The four departments of the institute are as follows :

    • Department of Direction and Screenplay writing
    • Department of Sound Recording
    • Department of Editing
    • Department of Motion Picture Photography
