The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar is an institution of national importance in the state of Assam for imparting technical education. The institute was earlier known as Regional Engineering College (REC).
With the passage of NIT bill, the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) of Government of India has renamed REC Silchar as National Institute of Technology, Silchar. The government also bestowed Deemed University status on NIT Silchar with agreement from University Grants Commission (UGC) and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
The NIT Silchar is an institution of national importance for providing engineering and technology training and conducting research in a range of disciplines. The reach of NIT Silchar is not only limited to engineering and technology programmes. The institute conducts a number of study programmes in basic sciences, humanities and other allied disciplines. The institute also offers Continuing Education Programmes and Consultancy Services.
There are 7 boys hostels and 2 girls hostels, one being constructed recently. The Institute computing facility includes high-end workstations and Intel Pentium based Personal Computers. Institute has its Internet Access facility through a 2-MBPS leased line circuit from M/S.All the staff and students of the Institute avail medical aid from the dispensary.
