Navodaya Vidyalya Samiti (NVS), an autonomous organization, was set up in 1985 with the purpose of establishing and managing co-educational residential schools known as Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas across the country, for imparting education from class VI to XII. The Samiti commenced its functioning with just two schools in 1985-86. Since then the number of Vidyalayas have grown. Today, there are 557 Navodaya Vidyalyas across the country. Out of which, 539 are functional. Nearly 158000 students are on record roll of these schools. The education at Navodaya Vidyalaya is provided free of cost. The schools are fully residential and provide all amenities to the learners as well as teachers. The Samiti has 8 regional offices across the country to maintain quality of education in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas.
Following are the main objectives of the Samiti:

- To ensure that all students of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas attain a reasonable level of competence in three languages as envisaged in the three language formula
- To serve, in each district, as focal points for improvements in quality of school education through sharing of experiences and facilities.
