Edtech player UpGrad announced on Monday that it has invested USD 30 million in its new offline higher education brand ‘UGDX’. With this investment, UGDX will open 10 institutes by next year, including three in the US.

The company’s San Francisco unit will go live in January 2023. Five of these institutes will be set up in Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru, and one each in Singapore and the Middle East. The company aims UGDX to reach an operational break-even in five quarters from its launch.

“As part of our goal to be the world’s first and largest fully integrated higher edtech company spanning college learners and working professionals from the age of 18 years to over 60 years, this is a natural extension as we move to a very scaled blended offline and online model under our own UpGrad brand,” UpGrad Co-Founder and chairperson Ronnie Screwvala said.

With the launch of these campuses, UpGrad is also aiming to rope in around 1,000 PhDs for specialized subjects. With the support of the World Bank’s International Finance Corporation (IFC) and IIFL, UpGrad is committed to providing quality education to students from all over the world.

“The K-12 education space has been seeing a significant slowdown, while the higher education segment is full of opportunities because it offers a higher return on investment for careers. UpGrad already has over 150 PhDs on its team, and another 1,000 lined up to join. This model allows faculty members the flexibility to also focus on research and publish papers while pursuing their passion for teaching,” Screwvala added.

UpGrad was founded in 2015 by Screwvala, Mayank Kumar, and Phalgun Kompalli. The company has been focused on its acquisition strategy to grow its user base and adjacencies in other verticals including test-prep.

Supreme Court to Deliver Verdict on Plea Challenging 10% EWS Quota in Admissions and Govt. Jobs Today

10% EWS Quota

Supreme Court to Deliver Verdict on Plea Challenging 10% EWS Quota in Admissions and Govt. Jobs Today

The Supreme Court has yet to reach a verdict on the legal question of whether the EWS quota violates the basic structure of the Constitution.

10% EWS Quota

The Supreme Court is set to announce its judgment today on a series of petitions challenging the 103rd Constitution amendment, which provides 10 percent reservation for economically weaker sections (EWS) in admissions and government jobs.

The five-judge Constitution bench headed by Chief Justice Uday Umesh Lalit is expected to deliver the verdict on whether the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) quota violates the basic structure of the Constitution.

The apex court had reserved its judgment on the matter after hearing from senior lawyers on September 27th. The six-and-a-half day hearing included then-Attorney General K K Venugopal and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta.

Mohan Gopal and Tamil Nadu, represented by senior advocate Shekhar Naphade, have opposed the EWS quota because economic criteria cannot be the basis for classification. If the top court upholds this reservation, it must revisit the Indira Sawhney (Mandal) judgment.

On the other hand, the then attorney general and the solicitor general had defended the amendment, arguing that the reservation provided under it was different and had been given without disturbing the 50% quota meant for the socially and economically backward classes (SEBC). They claimed that, as such, the amended provision does not violate the basic structure of the Constitution.

The Union education ministry’s Performing Grade Index (PGI) is designed to assess the performance of school education at the district level.

2020-21 School Performing Grade Index

On Thursday, the Union education ministry released a report on the 2020-21 Performing Grade Index (PGI) which assesses school education at the district level. Kerala, Maharashtra, and Punjab were at the top of the list, with Arunachal Pradesh coming in last at the seventh place – the lowest allocated to any state this year.

PGI evaluates school education based on 70 indicators that fall under categories like outcomes, governance, and management. These categories are then divided into domains like learning outcomes, access, equity, and governance. Scores of 950 or more out of 1000 points are considered the highest achievable level 1. The lowest grade is level 10 for scores below 551.

The national capital, Delhi, scored 851-900 points and made it to Level 3 of the index, while eleven other states and UTs – including Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, West Bengal, Haryana, and Tamil Nadu – were graded at Level 3 in 2020-21. Most states and UTs were ranked at Level 2 or 6, with only Arunachal Pradesh being graded at Level 7. No state or union territory was ranked at Level 8 or lower.

The education ministry has released a statement saying that the PGI (Performing Grade Index) is designed to encourage states and Union Territories to take necessary steps to improve educational outcomes. The PGI will help identify gaps in the education system and prioritize areas for improvement, in order to ensure that schools provide a robust education for all students.
