Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar on Friday said further recruitment of teachers would be made for schools and salary hike would also be ensured, but asked education minister Chandrashekhar to get those who did not teach out.

“Wherever I go, the aspirants demand recruitment. I have also asked the officials to speed up the process. How many teachers were there before 2005? We have carried out bulk appointments and more will be done. But I urge the professors and teachers to teach in schools and colleges. Those who teach should get more and but those who don’t should be out,” he said, while speaking at the Shiksha Diwas function, organised to commemorate the birth anniversary of India’s first education minister Maulana Abul Kalam Azad.

On the occasion, the CM also released an app for monitoring schools, distributed scholarships and incentives through direct benefit transfer (DBT) and announced a bag-less day for students of primary schools every Saturday.

Finance minister Vijay Kunar Choudhary, who earlier held the education portfolio, said Bihar was working on the ideals of Azad in the true sense by ensuring communal harmony and encouragement to education, especially girls’ education. Education minister Chandrashekhar chaired the function.

Meanwhile, candidates who have cleared TET (Teacher Eligibility Test) have been protesting in Bihar’s capital Patna for a week now, demanding that the state government start the seventh phase of recruitment for government school teachers. The first phase of recruitment began in 2006 and the sixth phase is currently underway.

“We will continue on our indefinite agitation till the notification is issued. We had hoped deputy chief minister Tejaswhi Prasad Yadav, who was in our support till last May, would be forthright and immediately announce the vacancies, but that has not happened. The education minister is also from his party RJD this time, unlike earlier when the department always remained with the JD-U,” says one of the teacher aspirants.

Sharing a note on the social media platform, Twitter, the MP said not taking away a child’s dignity and self-confidence because s/he was unable to score high marks in exams is not the correct way to deal with kids. Among the students who are sitting for the exam, there is an artist who doesn’t need to understand math, there is an entrepreneur who doesn’t care about history or English literature and a musician whose chemistry marks won’t matter.

“If your child does get top marks, that’s great! But if he or she doesn’t…please don’t take away their self-confidence or dignity from them. Tell them it’s OK, it’s just an exam. They are cut out for much bigger things in life. Tell them, no matter what you love them and will not judge them,” the note read.

“This letter should be read by all parents on the occasion of #NationalEducationDay, marking the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (India’s first Minister of Education, 1947 to 1958). We overemphasise exams in India. Let’s stop judging our kids by exam marks alone!” tweeted Tharoor.

Several social media users commented on Tharoor’s post with several agreeing to him. “Superb ! Every human being has an inborn talent in him / her but it’s irony of our society that instead of focusing on talents of d kid we force our own thought for them , it’s crucial for even grownups also to understand & expand their talent,” tweeted one user.

While some blamed it on the education system. “Parents are completely influenced by the system their kids will have to go through. So, the onus is on education system.,” tweeted one while another wrote, “Merit does not get recognition in India and there is no equal opportunity for everyone to hone their natural skills. Marks is just one issue.”

West Bengal Board of Primary Education (WBBPE) releases the 2014 Teacher’s Eligibility Test (TET) results with a list of candidates and the marks obtained at-wbbpe.org. In addition to this, WBBPE also published a list of the reserved category candidates that scored 82 marks in the examination.

According to the court orders, the candidates in these published lists have been declared as primary TET-qualified candidates. Therefore, the West Bengal board has been ordered to adhere to the WBBPE Recruitment Rules, 2016.

IndiaEducation Counselling

The petitioner candidates are requested to submit all documents and testimonials (academic training, Id proof) along with a copy of the re-evaluated digitised data of OMR sheets containing the revised TET marks obtained from the WBBPE from November 14 to November 14, 2022, within office hours from 10:30 AM to 5:30 PM. “The date and place of scrutiny verification and interview of the candidates will be notified through the boards official website (wbbpe.org)” read the official notification.

The matter of recruitment of TET candidates sparked protests of agitators that demanded immediate appointment as the 2014 TET recruitment was not carried on merit-basis and that conducting two rounds of interviews was “not fair”. The protestors refused to reappear for exams and claimed that they were qualified for recruitment.

However, the board assured candidates who have cleared the TET examination and are on the TET merit list will not be left out. WBBPE ruled out the possibility of directly recruiting TET candidates who qualified the 2014 examinations but failed to clear interviews. WBBPE president Goutam Paul asked the candidates to re-appear for the TET exam this year, the board also said that the provision of relaxing the age bar for candidates will also be considered.

“The ISC should begin by the second or third week of February and ICSE by the last week of February. We will announce the dates by the end of December, hopefully,” Gerry Arathoon, chief executive and secretary of the council, told The Telegraph over the phone on Friday evening.

In 2022, the council had two semesters for both ICSE and ISC because of Covid. As the scare of Covid waned, the council announced in May its decision to go back to one exam at the end of the academic year for the batch of 2022-23.

Arathoon addressed school principals at the conference. The council will set questions for the annual exams of classes IX and XI in 2024.

“This will be to ensure uniformity in the question pattern,” Arathoon told The Telegraph.

Schools will have to hold the annual exams for classes IX and XI at the same time when the board sends the question papers.
