UGC Requests Faculty and Student Registration for Fit India Movement

UGC Requests Faculty and Student Registration for Fit India Movement

Nitin Varma

education news 26 1

The University Grants Commission has requested that all higher educational institutions and their affiliated colleges encourage students and faculty to register on the Fit India portal. In a letter dated November 28, the UGC instructed institutes to upload data on fitness activities performed at various times. Students and staff can register via the Fit India website fitindiahe.education.gov.in and update fitness activities data.

In order to support students and faculty in achieving physical, mental, social-emotional, and intellectual well-being, the Ministry of Education (MoE) has developed the Fit India webpage. Encouraging fitness as easy, pleasurable, and cost-free is one of the strategies suggested under this objective. Another is raising awareness of fitness through targeted advertising, as well as promoting various physical activities that support fitness.

IndiaEducation Counselling

“The mission of the Movement is to bring about behavioral changes and move towards a more physically active lifestyle,” UGC statement.

By providing a forum for residents to exchange knowledge, promote awareness, and share personal fitness experiences, the project put forth under this purpose aims to foster indigenous sports and introduce fitness to every educational institution.

On August 29, 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi started the Fit India Movement with the intention of integrating fitness into every aspect of our everyday life.

However, some of the draft norms for deemed-to-be universities that the UGC released earlier this month did not sit well with the institutions. The rules forbid donation or capitation fees, keep track of the costs associated with particular courses, and call for these universities to reserve a sizeable corpus money for development.

The standard for the chancellor’s fixed tenure, which must be for a maximum of five years with no reappointment, has drawn the greatest flak. According to Prof Dr G Viswanathan, the founder and chancellor of Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), the chancellor of the institute is the soul of the institution in the case of deemed-to-be universities. He continued that changing the tenure would not result in much.

education news 21 1

Sandeep Sharma, Principal at the Government Senior Secondary School in Balag, a small village situated on the Kotkhai-Solan road, has announced free air, rail and road trips to toppers, 60 km from Shimla, as an incentive to motivate his students to excel in studies. Sharma will fund the trips from his pocket.

The toppers of classes 11 and 12 will be treated to an air travel to either Chandigarh or Dharamshala, while those securing highest marks in classes 9 and 10 will get to travel to Delhi by Kalka-New Delhi Shatabdi Express. Those topping the exams in classes 6, 7 and 8 will be taken on a road trip to Chandigarh, Mr Sharma said. The idea is to create a healthy competition among the students and motivate them to work hard.

Mr. Sharma told PTI that he believes sponsoring city trips for students is a better idea than giving cash prizes, as it will not only lift their spirits, but also give them exposure–since many of them have not visited big cities before. The students are already thrilled at the prospect of the trip, and Sharma believes that they will get to see and learn new things while feeling confident.

The initiative has resonated with the students and they have been spending more time studying, said Mr Sharma. He had previously spent Rs 10 lakh on renovating the Government Senior Secondary School in Cheog, his alma mater.
